Donald Trump’s administration has started to remove or downgrade mentions of the climate crisis across the US government, with the websites of several major departments pulling down references to anything related to the climate crisis. Climate scientists said they were braced “for the worst”.

A major climate portal on the Department of Defense’s website has been scrapped, as has the main climate change section on the site of the Department of State. A climate change page on the White House’s website no longer exists, nor does climate content provided by the US agriculture department, including information that provides vulnerability assessments for wildfires.

An entire section on “climate and sustainability” hosted by the Department of Transportation has now vanished, with the department’s new leadership also ordering the elimination of any policy positions, directives or funding “which reference or relate in any way to climate change, ‘greenhouse gas’ [sic] emissions, racial equity, gender identity, ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ goals, environmental justice or the Justice40 initiative”.

Sean Duffy, the US transportation secretary, said the administration is focused on “eliminating excessive regulations that have hindered economic growth, increased costs for American families, and prioritized far-left agendas over practical solutions”.

Some researchers have found that their own studies, from ocean carbon cycles to the connectivity of cleaner electrical grids, have now vanished from federal government websites. Critics say the actions will stifle the public’s understanding of the climate crisis amid record-breaking temperatures and a wave of storms and wildfires that are being worsened by the burning of fossil fuels.

“We should plan for the worst,” said Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. “The keys to the car have been given to the polluters and fossil fuel plutocrats and they intend to drive it off the climate cliff.”

Mann said the Trump administration may be following in the footsteps of Florida, which last year passed a law banning any reference to climate change from state laws.

Climate activists from Just Stop Oil painted over the grave of British naturalist Charles Darwin at London’s Westminster Abbey on Monday.

Two activists entered Westminster Abbey – Britain’s site for royal weddings, coronations, burials and a major tourist attraction – on Monday morning and used spray chalk on Darwin’s grave, the campaign group said in a statement.

The activists wrote “1.5 is dead” in orange over the surface of the white marble gravestone – a reference to recent news that global temperatures in 2024 had exceeded 1.5 Celsius above the pre-industrial era for the first time.

“We have passed the 1.5 degree threshold that was supposed to keep us safe,” one of the activists said. “Darwin would be turning in his grave to know we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction.”

Darwin, best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection, died in 1882. He is buried in Westminster Abbey’s Scientists’ Corner, where Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawking are also buried.

Montana’s top court ruled on Wednesday the state’s constitution guarantees a right to a stable climate and invalidates laws barring regulators from considering the effects of greenhouse-gas emissions when permitting fossil-fuel projects.

The Montana Supreme Court upheld a landmark trial court decision in favor of 16 young people who said their health and futures were being jeopardized by climate change that the state aggravates through its permitting of energy projects.

The 6-1 decision, the first of its kind by a U.S. state supreme court, came in the first lawsuit to go to trial nationwide by young environmental activists challenging state and federal policies they say are exacerbating climate change.

Chase Scheuer, a spokesperson for Republican Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, in a statement called the ruling “disappointing, but not surprising.”

“The majority of the state Supreme Court justices yet again ruled in favor of their ideologically aligned allies and ignored the fact that Montana has no power to impact the climate,” Scheuer said.

Wednesday’s ruling rejected Republican-led Montana’s bid to overturn District Court Judge Kathy Seeley’s 2023 decision that said the young people had a right to a clean and healthful environment under a 1972 amendment to Montana’s constitution that required the state to protect and improve the environment.

A pair of climate activists who vandalized the National Archives Rotunda back in February when they dumped red powder on the encasement protecting the U.S. Constitution have learned their fate.

Donald Zepeda, 35, of Maryland, and Jackson Green, 27, of Utah, were sentenced to 24 months in prison and 18 months, respectively, in the Feb. 14, 2024, attack on the U.S. Constitution housed at the National Archives in Washington D.C., U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge David Geist of the Washington Field Office Criminal and Cyber Division announced on Monday.

Zepeda pleaded guilty on Aug. 15 to felony destruction of property for dumping a fine red powder over a display case containing the U.S. Constitution in the Rotunda of the Archives building.

The cost of cleaning up after the stunt, which was intended to draw attention to climate change, exceeded $58,000, officials said.

The vandalism also closed the Rotunda for four days, preventing students, visitors, and D.C. residents from visiting.

Green also pleaded guilty on Aug. 13 to felony destruction of property for the red powder attack on the U.S. Constitution and, in addition, pleaded guilty to one count of injury to a National Gallery of Art exhibit for his Nov. 14, 2023, defacement of a memorial to Black Civil War soldiers, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial (1900).

Zepeda and Green were also ordered to serve 24 months of supervised release and to each pay $58,600 in restitution. They were also ordered to do community service, which must include cleaning up graffiti. Both were banned from D.C. and all museums across the U.S.

Green had been charged in the assault on the Shaw Memorial only 13 days prior to joining Zepeda in the defacement of the Archives.

The group issued a statement following the sentencing stating they anticipated the sentence to be “harsh.”

“Despite lack of evidence that any damage was done, both Green and Zepeda were charged with felony destruction of government property,” the group wrote in a statement on their website. “The tempera paint powder was selected because it would do no harm, and indeed no powder entered the case.”

Maybe in prison, they will finally get laid.

Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey (D) this week announced a lawsuit against major oil companies and their top lobbying group, alleging they knowingly concealed the role of fossil fuels in climate change for decades.

Frey said Tuesday that defendants in the lawsuit include Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP, Sunoco, and the American Petroleum Institute (API). In a nearly 200-page complaint, the state alleges the companies contributed to Maine’s financial liability by concealing knowledge of the link as far back as the 1960s.

“For over half a century, these companies chose to fuel profits instead of following their science to prevent what are now likely irreversible, catastrophic climate effects,” Frey said in a statement. “In so doing, they burdened the State and our citizens with the consequences of their greed and deception.”

The state said it is seeking a jury trial and damages compensating the state for both future mitigation efforts and the costs of earlier impacts.

Maine is the ninth state to sue to hold oil companies responsible for the effects of climate change, none of which have gone to trial. A separate coalition of Republican attorneys general has called on the Supreme Court to bar lawsuits from five of those states, arguing they rely on powers the states do not have.

The Pine Tree State has seen a number of extreme weather events in recent years in particular, with Sen. Susan Collins (R) saying at a Senate hearing last week that recent storms “took out about 50 percent of our fishing infrastructure in our state.”

Why don’t they sue the companies putting PFAS and pesticides in the groundwater? No one even doubts that these things are both real and very dangerous, and those polluters face no consequences.

The Welsh government has been told to ban dogs from the countryside in a bid to tackle racism.

It comes as part of the government’s plans to end racism in Wales by 2030, ensuring that “all areas” of public life are transformed.

The recommendations were given in a report submitted by environmental group Climate Cymru BAME.

Dog-free areas should be created in local green spaces to make them more inclusive, the report says. However, the point is not elaborated on.

Other recommendations include encouraging ethnic minorities to volunteer in the environmental sector and climate change advocacy.

The report is being used to help “support policy teams” that are “developing and implementing” anti-racism plans.

It was produced following calls for an evaluation of “racism relating to climate change, environment, and rural affairs”.

The Welsh Conservatives have hit out at the report, labelling it “nonsense”.

Germany plans to abolish the sale of almost all new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2035, but has a long way to go in the next decade to square this with the public, a report on new data in Die Welt finds. While a survey that 29 per cent of Germans would only ever consider an electric car if forced by law and only 18 per cent say they would consider an electric for their next car purchase, actual observed behaviour is more instructive.

Just 3.6 per cent of ICE drivers made the switch to electric in Germany this year, it is stated, with electric vehicles accounting for 2.9 per cent of vehicles on the country’s roads. Yet at the same time, 34 per cent of electric car owners switched back to ICE so far this year.

This is a figure that has risen year-on-year all this decade, with the switch-back rate to gasoline now double the 14 per cent observed in 2021. As observed in the German press: “Apparently, electric cars cannot convince many owners to stick with this form of propulsion in the long term.”

Earlier data reported on earlier this year stated demand for electric vehicles was falling across the continent, with demand in Germany falling nearly 29 per cent.

China is making some good ones, and they are getting better, but China has a very different society, where things just tend to work better. Oregon’s most populous county has sued the state’s biggest gas provider for allegedly sowing climate doubt, marking the first time a utility has faced charges of climate deception.

Last year, Multnomah county sued 17 fossil fuel companies and interest groups for allegedly deceiving the public about the climate crisis. The lawsuit came two years after a record-shattering heat dome killed 69 people across the county.

Research shows the climate crisis greatly exacerbated the 2021 temperature surge. Oil and gas companies, which fuel global warming, should pay climate damages, the lawsuit argues.

Should companies that install windmills and solar panels pay for the caused by the rare earth minerals they’re dumping in the groundwater across the entire country though?

On Monday, the county announced that it has amended its complaint to include the gas utility NW Natural, Oregon’s oldest and largest fossil fuel company.

“NW Natural engaged in an enterprise of misrepresentation about the effects its products would have on the climate,” the amended litigation says.

NW Natural is responsible for some 9% of Oregon’s carbon dioxide emissions, the lawsuit alleges, arguing that it has also disseminated misinformation about the climate dangers of gas.

The county’s move could open the door for more litigation against utilities, said Alyssa Johl, vice-president of legal and general counsel at the Center for Climate Integrity, which tracks and supports climate deception lawsuits.

Britain’s last coal-fired power plant is closing on Monday, ending 142 years of coal-generated electricity in the nation that sparked the Industrial Revolution.

The Ratcliffe-on-Soar station in central England is finishing its final shift at midnight after more than half a century of turning coal into power. The U.K. government hailed the closure as a milestone in efforts to generate all of Britain’s energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Plant manager Peter O’Grady said it was “an emotional day.”

“When I started my career 36 years ago, none of us imaged a future without coal generation in our lifetimes,” he said.

The shutdown makes Britain the first country from the Group of Seven major economies to phase out coal — though some other European nations, including Sweden and Belgium, got there sooner.

Owner Uniper says many of the 170 remaining employees will stay on during a two-year decommissioning process.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the plant’s closure “marks the end of an era and coal workers can be rightly proud of their work powering our country for over 140 years. We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country.”

“The era of coal might be ending, but a new age of good energy jobs for our country is just beginning,” he said.

The new age looks very grim so far

The world’s first coal-fired electricity plant, Thomas Edison’s Edison Electric Light Station, opened in London in 1882.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar, which opened in 1967, is a landmark whose eight concrete cooling towers and 199-meter (650-foot) chimney are seen by millions of people a year as they drive past on the M1 highway or speed by on trains.

In 1990 coal provided about 80% of Britain’s electricity. By 2012 it had fallen to 39%, and by 2023 it stood at just 1%, according to figures from the National Grid. More than half of Britain’s electricity now comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar power, and the rest from natural gas and nuclear energy.

“Ten years ago, coal was the leading source of this country’s power — generating a third of our electricity,” said Dhara Vyas, deputy chief executive of trade body Energy U.K.

“So, to get to this point just a decade later, with coal’s contribution replaced by clean and low carbon sources, is an incredible achievement,” Vyas said. “As we aim for further ambitious targets in the energy transition, it’s worth remembering that few back then thought such a change at such a pace was possible.”

Coal has fueled civil strife as well as powering the country. Tens of thousands of miners walked out in 1984 over plans by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government to close more than 20 coal pits. The strike lasted a year, divided communities and saw widespread violence as police clashed with pickets. The miners’ eventual defeat helped break the power of Britain’s trade unions and hasten the end of the mining industry and the communities that relied on it.

Coal remains a combustible issue. Plans to open Britain’s first new coal mine in 30 years in northwest England divided residents, with some welcoming the promise of well-paid jobs and others opposing the pollution and carbon emissions it would bring. On Sept. 13 the High Court struck down planning permission for the mine that had been granted by the previous Conservative government in 2022.

Another chapter in Britain’s carbon-burning industrial heritage ends Monday with the closure of the last blast furnace at one of the world’s biggest steelworks, in Port Talbot, Wales.

Almost 2,000 jobs are being lost with the shutdown at the plant, owned by India’s Tata Steel. Tata plans to replace the blast furnace, which runs on the coal derivative coke, with a cleaner electric furnace that will emit less carbon and require fewer workers.

Folk were freaked out when a ‘creepy’ puppet of a giant baby that looks like a 27ft Chucky doll turned up in their town’s square.

The figure – called ‘Lilly’ – was installed in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, by the local council to encourage schoolchildren to talk about the environment.

Officials recorded what kids said to the baby and plan to broadcast their remarks from its mouth at an event next month.

But locals have been left horrified by the puppet which opens and closes its eyes and resembles the serial killer doll in the Child’s Play horror movie series.

A mum posted: “I will not be taken (sic) my daughter down there too (sic) see it. It will scare her.’”

Rochdale Borough Council said it was `lucky the baby is a puppet’ or she `would be upset’ by the criticism.

“This is an event for young children and they love her, the response has been fantastic,”’ the authority added.

Officials said schoolchildren who visited the puppet sang and spoke to it about their feelings on the climate crisis and how they plan to look after nature.

The recordings will be played back when the puppet stars at an environmental arts festival at Hollingworth Lake Country Park on October 24.

Sue Smith, the Labour-run council’s cabinet member for communities and co-operation, said the children’s reaction to the giant figure was `incredible’.
