Burger King’s new hamburger to celebrate Pride Month has caused quite the stir on social media.

The fast-food giant’s Austrian stores will be serving a “Pride Whopper” with “two equal buns” — either two top buns or two bottom buns — until June 20 to promote “equal love and equal rights,” the company said in an Instagram post last week.

Burger King said in the post that the new burger’s “little twist” is “meant to put a smile on our faces and to remind us to treat each other with respect and peace.”

Some users on social media found the new burger funny, while others criticized the company, arguing that the joke was offensive and an example of “rainbow washing” — the practice of companies showing surface-level support for LGBTQ+ identifying people without any specific action that could improve their lives.

What are they supposed to do to “improve their lives”?

Pass out poppers and meth as condiments with the anal burger?

Chick-fil-A is getting skewered by a group of New York lawmakers who are looking to block the company’s bid to open restaurants at state highway rest stops because of its owner’s anti-LGBTQ stance.

The Atlanta-based fast-food chain is among a handful of restaurants that were awarded contracts by the New York State Thruway Authority to be part of a $450 million plan to renovate 27 service areas.

But Chick-fil-A’s chief executive, Dan Cathy — whose father, S. Truett Cathy, founded the $8.4 billion company in 1946 — has publicly disparaged LGBTQ rights, which some legislators say should disqualify the privately owned company from opening eateries at state-run highway rest stops.

Assemblyman Harry Bronson, a Rochester-area Democrat, sent a letter to Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew Driscoll asking him to “re-examine the list of approved concessions” for the rest stops because of Chick-fil-A’s past support of anti-LGBTQ groups, according to the Auburn Citizen.

I was under the impression everyone named Bronson is at least reasonably based, but it turns out that’s not true at all

Bronson and two other legislators who signed the letter — Deborah Glick and Danny O’Donnell — are openly gay, according to the report.

Chick-fil-A’s foundation has given money to anti-LGBTQ organizations and supported opponents of same-sex marriage ballot initiatives, according to the report. Chick-fil-A’s restaurants are also closed on Sundays — missing out on more than $1 billion in revenue — so that its employees can go to church if they choose to.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also tried to ban Chick-fil-A from the city over Cathy’s stance. His efforts flopped and the Big Apple is now the home of the world’s largest Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A disputed that it currently has a political agenda, pointing to a 2019 announcement in which it pledged support to just three causes: education, homelessness and hunger.

“Chick-fil-A is excited about the partnership and the opportunity to further serve the residents of New York,” the company said in a statement. “We want to be clear that Chick-fil-A does not have a political or social agenda, and we welcome everyone in our restaurants.”

Assembly member Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) also said in a statement, “Bigotry and discrimination are not New York state values. New York state has long worked to advance LGBTQ+ rights, but inviting a restaurant that is committed to blocking equality to open on state property will undermine our continuing efforts toward true equality.”

Chick-Fil-A said on Monday that it has stopped funding two Christian charities after coming under fire in recent weeks from LGBTQ activists.

The fast-food chain’s foundation has donated millions of dollars to The Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Both organizations have a history of opposing same-sex marriage.

Chick-fil-A said it no longer funds the organizations.

“We made multi-year commitments to both organisations and we fulfilled those obligations in 2018,” a spokeswoman for Chick-fil-A told the Thomson Reuters Foundation, adding the company would focus its giving on “education, homelessness and hunger.”

In other words, they’re now donating to Black people.

When reached by CNBC, the company declined to comment further.

The owner of a Chick-fil-A location in Sacramento, California, calls it a “living wage.” In Eric Mason’s view, that would be $17 or $18 an hour, which is what he vows he’ll be paying his workers, starting Monday, June 4. The rate represents a sizable increase for employees now making $12 to $13 an hour.

“As the owner, I’m looking at it big-picture and long-term,” Mason told a local news station. “What that does for the business is provide consistency, someone that has relationships with our guests, and it’s going to be building a long-term culture.”

The idea, Mason said, is to hire workers — he prefers “hospitality professionals” — who will stick around, a worthwhile goal for a brand known for its customer service that’s in an industry that had a 73 percent turnover rate in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“What we are going to be looking for is people trying to raise families,” Mason said. “Maybe they can work just one job.”

There are more than 2,200 Chick-fil-A restaurants across the U.S., most of them owned by franchisees. A Chik-fil-A spokesman noted that Mason’s $17 to $18 an hour wage floor was his call, not the company’s.

“Chick-fil-A restaurants are individually owned and operated, so wage decisions are made at the local level,” the spokesman said, adding that “many of our owner/operators began their careers as hourly team members.”

A newborn baby has been awarded free food for life after being delivered at a Chick-fil-A in Texas.

On Tuesday evening, San Antonio couple Robert and Falon Griffin stopped at a Chick-fil-A on their way to hospital, local news station KSAT reported on Thursday.

Falon Griffin, who was experiencing contractions at the time, reportedly banged on the door of the restaurant, begging the servers to use the bathroom.

“I didn’t know I was going to have a baby in there! I was going to the restroom,” she told KSAT.

By the time she made it to the bathroom, the baby was already on its way. The manager at the store grabbed towels, and Robert, her husband, was forced to do the delivery.

The couple told KSAT that Chick-fil-A happened to be their favorite local eating spot. They had already bought Gracelyn, their newborn, a Chick-Fil-A onesie before the incident happened.

After all the stress, the family was rewarded with some exciting news. Gracelyn will be entitled to free food at the chain for life and a guaranteed job there when she hits 14.

Chick-fil-A is considered to be one of the most loved chains in the fast-food industry. It earned the top spot in the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s 2018 survey, beating out chains such as Panera Bread and Papa John’s.

Students at Duquesne University are petitioning their school to reconsider a plan to bring Chick-fil-A to campus, arguing the fast-food restaurant’s support for traditional marriage would create an unsafe environment for gay students.

Niko Martini, a student senator at the Pittsburgh university, filed a petition with the student government asking the school to reconsider the inclusion of Chick-fil-A in its Options Food Court.

“Chick-fil-A has a questionable history on civil rights and human rights,” Mr. Martini said in a statement to the student newspaper, The Duke. “I think it’s imperative the university chooses to do business with organizations that coincide with the [university’s] mission and expectations they give students regarding diversity and inclusion.”

Duquesne is a Catholic university, and the church teaches that all homosexual acts are “intrinsically evil.”

The student government did not adopt that resolution, but agreed to consider another measure vetting the views of the popular chicken sandwich shop.

Chick-fil-A has been a bane of the left since CEO Dan Cathy said the company supports “the biblical definition of the family unit.”
