An anti-LGBTQ group in Cameroon filed a complaint with the public prosecutor against President Paul Biya’s daughter after she announced she was in a same-sex relationship on social media.

In Cameroon, sexual relations between people of the same sex are illegal and punishable by prison sentences ranging from six months to five years.

In an act of defiance towards her native country, Brenda Biya published a photo of herself and her partner kissing on June 30 — the last day of pride month.

A Spanish court has for the first time granted citizenship to a migrant child who was born while their mother was trying to reach Europe.

The case concerned a young girl who arrived in the southern Spanish town of Tarifa in May 2018, on board a migrant boat.

The girl’s Cameroonian mother had given birth in Morocco before reaching Spain and has been living in the European Union (EU) country ever since.

While the mother had been able to regularise her own status, her daughter has no passport and was denied access to Spanish healthcare or education.

Citizens can usually only obtain Spanish nationality through their parents, their spouse, or if they have lived in the country for ten years.

The court of the northern province of Guipúzcoa said it had granted the girl Spanish nationality based on her “best interests”.

Leaving the girl “stateless” would have placed her “in a situation of inequality in relation to other children”, the court said.

This would have represented “a significant denial of her basic and fundamental rights, including the right to education”, it added.

The ruling confirms a previous court decision in November 2021, which the Spanish government had challenged. The verdict can still be overturned by Spain’s Supreme Court.

The Biden administration on Friday announced it will offer Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to more than 10,000 immigrants from Cameroon in the U.S., protecting them from deportation and allowing them to work legally due to the ongoing armed conflict in the African country.

Once it is open for applications, the TPS program will allow Cameroonians who have lived in the U.S. as of April 14 to obtain work permits and deportation protections for 18 months if they meet the eligibility requirements and pass background checks.

A 1990 law authorizes the U.S. government to create TPS programs for immigrants who are undocumented or have temporary status if the U.S. determines their home country cannot safely accept the return of its citizens because of war, natural disasters or other “extraordinary” conditions.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the TPS designation for Cameroon was justified because of the years-old conflict between the Cameroonian government and armed separatist groups in the country’s Anglophone regions in the west. The fighting has killed 4,000 civilians, according to Human Rights Watch.

DHS also cited an increase in attacks by Boko Haram, an Islamist terrorist group in Africa. The conditions, DHS said, have fostered “extreme violence,” decimated Cameroon’s infrastructure, fueled economic turmoil and food insecurity and displaced hundreds of thousands of Cameroonians.

“Cameroonian nationals currently residing in the U.S. who cannot safely return due to the extreme violence perpetrated by government forces and armed separatists, and a rise in attacks led by Boko Haram, will be able to remain and work in the United States until conditions in their home country improve,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said.

Approximately 11,700 immigrants from Cameroon are expected to qualify for TPS, according to a DHS estimate. Cameroonians who arrive in the U.S. after Friday’s announcement, whether legally or illegally, will not be eligible for TPS.

While it allows beneficiaries to work and live in the U.S. without fear of deportation, TPS does not make them eligible for permanent residency or citizenship.

The Biden administration has increasingly used the TPS authority to shield subsets of immigrant groups in the U.S. from deportation, extending or creating designations for nearly a dozen countries beset by war, ethnic violence, political instability and other crises.

The designations by the Biden administration have made approximately 600,000 immigrants in the U.S. eligible for TPS, including citizens of Venezuela, Myanmar, Haiti, Afghanistan and Ukraine, government estimates show.

The moves stand in sharp contrast with the policies of the Trump administration, which sought to end TPS programs for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan as part of its crackdown on humanitarian immigration protections. Those efforts were blocked by federal court rulings.

Naseri Paul Biya, who serves as governor of the central region of Cameroon, told AP that authorities were still assessing the death toll. AP later reported, citing a preliminary report by the local health authorities, that as many as 8 people lost their lives in the incident. At least 40 injured people were reportedly taken to a nearby hospital.

We all know what the solution to this is.

If we want to protect the most precious thing in the entire universe – black lives – we need to move the entire population of Cameroon to the UK, where they have very orderly procedures for entering football stadiums.

An African singer behind a skin-bleaching cream called ‘Whitenicious’ has tried to justify the name of her product in a TV interview, saying: ‘white means pure.’

Asked what the product’s name meant to her, Nigerian and Cameroonian singer Dancia appeared to contradict herself by saying: ‘White means pure, not necessarily skin, but in general.’

She insisted that the cream is only for covering blemishes, despite an advertising campaign showing her entire body appearing lighter, adding: ‘Some people they don’t feel confident, they don’t feel pure, they don’t feel clean with dark spots.’

Critics have branded the product an ‘abomination’ saying it teaches young ‘girls of colour’ to be ashamed of their skin.In an interview with Channel 4, Dancia was asked whether she thought the message behind the product was that being white looked better than being black.She replied: ‘I was not selling that message, the media are selling that message. I didn’t say, buy the cream and look like Dancia.

‘I said seven day, fast acting dark spot remover. It’s called reading comprehension. If people missed that class then it’s not my fault.

‘If they think that their whole body is a dark spot then fine, because that’s not how I feel.’

Among Dancia’s critics is oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o who spoke out against racism in beauty and fashion and warned young black girls not to use bleaching products.

Nyong’o, star of 12 Years A Slave, admitted that when she was younger she wanted to wake up ‘just a little bit lighter’, because she was ashamed of her dark skin.

When asked whether she accepted the point made by Nyong’o, Dancia responded: ‘I don’t accept that. I don’t care about her story. I don’t know her.

‘I’m an adult and if I lighten my skin then that’s my choice, the same as bleaching my hair.’
