Police are seizing cars from men for catcalling women out jogging who were undercover female officers in disguise in a crackdown on harassment.

Four cars were taken away by officers as part of an initiative to help women feel safer when out exercising, after a survey found 60 per cent of women feel intimidated when they go for a run.

West Yorkshire Police, in partnership with other bodies, has undercover female police officers posing as runners.

The hope is to make men ‘think twice’ about cat calling and making inappropriate comments to exercising women, especially from cars as they drive past.

The council said the JogOn initiative had run six operations since March to catch men, and said it is ‘clear’ that many don’t even think the behaviour counts as harassment.

One of the men who was stopped even tried to give the excuse that he was ‘encouraging the females to run’.

Many women feeling scared and intimidated and seek out alternative running routes or changing the times they go out to avoid cat calling, offensive comments and physical harassment.

Runners said they had come to accept it as the norm and did not report it to the police, as they did not feel it would be taken seriously or that no action would be taken.

The police have sent female officers out in plain clothes to run or jog in ‘hotspot’ areas.

Bradford Council can also enforce its Public Space Protection Order which bans the anti-social use of vehicles and includes ‘shouting, swearing at, or abusing, threatening or intimidating another person – including using sexual language or making sexual suggestions’ from a vehicle.

Offenders can receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or a £1,000 fine.

Running club members are also being offered Active Bystander training, which will equip witnesses to intervene when an incident is unfolding in front of them.

Superintendent Beth Pagnillo, of Bradford District Police, said: ‘People might not think these behaviours are worth reporting but we want to make it clear that these behaviours and incidents can be reported, reviewed and investigated and will not be tolerated.

A man and woman are behind bars facing sentence for a rape in which their terrified victim was threatened with a knife and her clothes were ripped off.

Yazmin Ali, aged 31, of Lily Street, Manningham, Bradford, and Mohammed Hussain, aged 22, of Water Lily Road, Girlington, Bradford, lured the woman to a flat in the city with the promise of vodka and cocaine before attacking her.

Both were convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court in January of raping their victim in July, 2017.

Ali was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by biting her on the arm.

She pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment of a police officer arresting her for the offences.

Ali, who is being held in Styal Prison, and Hussain, who is locked up in HMP Leeds, were due to be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court yesterday by the trial judge, Recorder Simon Jackson QC.

But technical difficulties with the video link and Skype service, and pressure of time, led to the case being adjourned until May 14.

Prosecutor Ian Howard said Ali had previous convictions for Section 20 grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment, causing actual bodily harm, robbery, battery and criminal damage.

Hussain had a previous conviction for kidnap.

A man wanted in connection with the murder of a PC shot dead during a robbery has been arrested in Pakistan.

West Yorkshire officer Sharon Beshenivsky was killed outside a travel agency in Bradford in 2005 while responding to an armed robbery call.

Police said Piran Dhitta Khan, 71, had been wanted by officers investigating the fatal raid.

Mr Khan appeared in court in Islamabad where extradition was discussed. He was remanded in custody until 29 January.

PC Beshenivsky, 38, had only been an officer for nine months when she was shot in the chest on what was her youngest daughter Lydia’s fourth birthday.

She was a mother of three and stepmother of two children. Three men were jailed for life for her murder, two for manslaughter.

Her shift partner, PC Teresa Milburn, was also shot but survived.

PC Beshenivsky’s husband Paul said he was “glad” at the news of the arrest.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s just a matter of getting closure within what happened in 2005,” he said.

West Yorkshire Police had previously said Mr Khan was believed to be on the run in Pakistan and was being sought.

A sadistic torturer has been jailed for life for raping two women as part of a savage and gruesome reign of terror spanning thirty years.

Andrew Delsol was described by the judge today as “charming and clever on one side and vicious and self-obsessed on the other.”

He must serve a minimum of nine years behind bars before he can even be considered for release by the Parole Board.

Delsol, 55, made a chilling threat to murder one of the survivors of his campaign of sickening violence after he was convicted of 11 offences by a jury at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

They included four offences of rape, a Section 18 wounding, living on the earnings of prostitution, two offences of making a threat to kill, two offences of indecent assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

One of the women, who bravely gave her evidence without screens around the witness box, was in court when Delsol threatened: “I’ll murder that bitch,” as he was taken to the cells.

He is currently serving a 13-year extended sentence imposed in 2015 for terrorising a young mother he locked in an attic flat in Bradford.

During the two-week trial, the first woman told how she was beaten and raped by Delsol when she was a teenage sex worker in Bradford.

The ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ abuser forced her to earn a £100 a day to leave in a drawer for him to collect.

He punched and kicked her, tried to drown her in the bath and indecently assaulted her with a carpet cleaner pole.

She came forward after seeing Delsol’s photograph in the Telegraph & Argus when he was jailed in 2015.

A crack cocaine addict who committed two violent street robberies in two days has been jailed for six and a half years.

Qasim Hussain confronted his first victim with a raised axe on Toller Lane, Bradford, after dark on February 23.

Hussain, 24, of Queens Road, Bradford, struck again the next day, locking a disabled man in his car, stealing his money and bank card and threatening to take him on to the moors and stab him.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye told Bradford Crown Court today that Hussain spun his first victim, aged 40, round by the shoulder as he was walking home for tea wearing headphones.

Hussain raised an axe above his head and demanded: “I want your wallet.”

When the man said he had no money with him, Hussain shouted: “I’m not a dickhead, I’m on the run.”

He then seized the man’s phone from his pocket and made off.

The following morning, the police saw Hussain at the wheel of a distinctive lime green Ford Fiesta speeding on Lumb Lane in Bradford.

He jumped a red light and accelerated along Canal Road with the police pursuing him in a marked patrol vehicle.

Hussain raised his middle finger at the officers chasing after him, Miss Kaye said.

After a pursuit along “numerous streets” the police lost sight of Hussain.

He drove to The Sun Hotel in Kirkgate, Shipley, where he spotted a 58-year-old man, who had been left with serious mobility problems after an accident, who was standing outside.

Hussain offered to sell him some tobacco and told him to get into the Fiesta while they did the deal.

Hussain locked the man in the car and sped off, hitting him on the head as he jumped a red light at Fox Corner on to Otley Road.

He pulled on to a car a park and demanded: “Give me your wallet. I’ve got a knife.”

Although the man did not see a weapon, he handed Hussain his wallet and he took out £90 in cash and his bank card.

When the victim gave Hussain a false PIN number, he was very annoyed when he returned empty-handed from a cash machine, speeding off with the man still on board.

“He said he was going on to the moors to stab him,” Miss Kaye said.

The police saw Hussain shortly afterwards and went after him again.

When they tried to block his path in Frizinghall, the Fiesta collided with the patrol vehicle and span in the road.

The disabled man sustained whiplash, chest pains and cuts from a shattered window.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Hussain had previous convictions for a string of robberies, dating back to when he was 14.

His record also included possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin.

He pleaded guilty to two offences of robbery, possession of an axe as an offensive weapon, dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving without a licence or insurance.

A man is behind bars awaiting a long prison sentence for raping and sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl.

Haji Kaloga, 31, pleaded guilty to the offence and to assault by penetration of the same child at Bradford Crown Court today.

Kaloga, of Curzon Road, Barkerend, Bradford, was warned by Recorder Andrew Haslam QC to expect a lengthy jail sentence.

Kaloga, a Gambian national, admitted the offences on the day he was to stand trial.

When the indictment was put to him, he pleaded guilty to two sexual offences against the same girl, aged 11, both taking place on March 11 this year.

Kaloga’s barrister, Kitty Colley, did not ask for a probation report.

He will be “an offender of particular concern” who cannot be released from prison until the Parole Board deems it safe to do so.

The case was adjourned until Friday, September 13, at the request of prosecutor Christine Egerton so that a victim personal statement can be obtained from the girl.

Kaloga was ordered to sign on the sex offender register with immediate effect.

An “infatuated” married man who sexually abused a 13-year-old girl in his Audi car on Baildon Moor has been jailed for six years.

Farooq Miah, 29, groomed and manipulated the child, buying her a gift, drinks and ice cream and isolating her from family and friends, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

When concerns about the “relationship” were raised on a trafficking website, Miah told his victim to lie to the police, prosecutor Gerald Hendron said.

The child at first denied that Miah, of Grosvenor Road, Manningham, Bradford, had abused her and tried to conceal her phone from investigating officers. She then disclosed that he had met her late at night in a fast food restaurant and taken her in his Audi on to Baildon Moor.

He bought ice cream and drinks and they smoked cigarettes. Miah began by touching her indecently and progressed to having oral sex with her, Mr Hendron said.

He took a video on the girl’s phone of her performing a sex act on him.

It was found by the police, along with the 996 calls and texts between Miah and the child.

Miah pleaded guilty to eight charges of sexual activity with a child and a single count of making an indecent image.

She told the police that Miah sulked if she refused to engage in sexual activity with him. The girl said in her victim impact statement that she believed at the time that Miah was in love with her.

Miah’s barrister, Taryn Turner, said he had pleaded guilty to all the offences and been held in custody since June 7.

Richard Buchanan, 56, exchanged 800 texts with his victim, signing off one of them with “Missing you sexy,” Bradford Crown Court heard on Tuesday.

He gave her gifts, including a phone charger, chocolate, Coca Cola and a handbag from a British Heart Foundation charity shop.

Buchanan, who worked as a casual support worker in the Brighouse area, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder by a care worker.

The court heard that Buchanan had anal sex with the woman in a disabled toilet after they both removed their clothing.

An alleged grooming gang accused of abusing underage girls in a children’s care home is on trial in Bradford, England.

Prosecutor Kama Melly QC accused the men of having “exploited and manipulated” the two alleged victims in 2008, when they were aged 14, “in a variety of ways, taking advantage of their youth and the situation [the girls] found themselves in, both just entering care and in really difficult circumstances,” the BBC reports.

“Some of the defendants were actually forceful, threatening and violent, others used alcohol and drugs, others created a manipulated relationship in order to facilitate their sexual exploitation,” she added.

“But all defendants, say the Crown, engaged in cynical and manipulative behaviour in order to achieve their objective of sexual activity with [the girls].”
