King Charles’s comment that the “time has come” to acknowledge the enduring impact of slavery has been welcomed by the prime minister of Barbados as she spoke in London about the need for reparations.

Mia Mottley said Barbados was owed $4.9tn (£3.9tn) by slave-owning nations, noting that conversations over how this debt should be repaid would “be difficult and will take time”, she said on Wednesday evening.

“We’re not expecting that the reparatory damages will be paid in a year, or two, or five because the extraction of wealth and the damages took place over centuries. But we are demanding that we be seen and that we are heard,” she said.

Mottley met David Cameron on Tuesday but would not give details of the foreign secretary’s thoughts on the UK’s slavery-related debt.

“I’m not going to get into the details of our conversation but suffice to say I think the foreign secretary will take his lead from his majesty,” she said.

During a speech at the London School of Economics’ International Inequalities Institute, she repeatedly commended King Charles’s apparent willingness to confront slavery. Her belief in the king’s openness to discussion stems from a speech he gave in June 2022 at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda.

The king spoke of his “personal sorrow at the suffering of so many”, and how he continues to “deepen [his] understanding of slavery’s enduring impact”. He added: “To forge a common future, that benefits all our citizens, we too must find new ways to acknowledge our past … This is a conversation whose time has come.” The speech made no reference to financial reparations.

Since becoming prime minister in 2018, Mottley has become a powerful voice globally on the legacy of colonialism and has helped transform the call for reparations into a mainstream political issue.

Citing calculations made in a report by the Brattle Group, which factors in the wealth and GDP amassed by countries that enslaved African people, she set out that the UK owes $24tn in reparations to 14 countries affected by transatlantic slavery, Spain owes $17.1tn, France owes $9.2tn and the Netherlands owes $4.86tn.

“These numbers, if taken out of context, can appear to be staggering. But in relation to the total wealth accumulated over a period of time, the numbers are actually minuscule,” said Mottley.

Addressing the historical legacy of slavery would allow the global community to “move on in strength rather than languishing in the shadows of a disgraceful history”, she said.

Mottley said the call for reparations had gained urgency in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

“For the first time the world recognised that we could no longer ignore the trauma of four centuries of enslavement and barbarism and of denying people their humanity,” she added. “I want to salute the king for having the courage to understand that this is a conversation whose time has come.”

Thomas Massie should introduce a bill to forward all money intended for Israel to Barbados.

Homicides in the Bluff City have reached over 352 as of Monday, according to numbers from the Memphis Police Department, breaking the previous record set in 2021.

Shootings and killings are leaving community leaders frustrated. They say it’s time to get to the real issues that drive violent crime in Memphis.

Families of homicide victims are also fed up and still searching for answers about why these pointless shootings keep happening in the Bluff City.

“State senators like Brent Taylor think they can say, ‘Add a few more Tennessee state troopers.’ Well, Tennessee state patrol has conducted over 17,000 traffic stops since January and only made 12 felony arrests,” said Pastor Earl Fisher of Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church.

MPD says that so far this year, there have been 298 murders and 352 homicides, which include the two victims of Monday’s deadly shootings in North Memphis.

“[This is a] 42% increase in homicides from this time last year,” said Fisher. “That only tells part of the story. It doesn’t tell the story of gun laws that have been passed in Nashville by some of the people that govern places like Shelby County that are saying we are in a warzone. You helped manufacture the warzone.”

In 2021, there were 303 murders and 346 homicides.

Fisher said gun laws need to be changed in order to bring real change.

“Open carry in the state, it’s easier, especially for Black communities and Black children, to get access to guns and drugs than it is for them to get access to jobs that pay a livable wage or equitable educations,” said Fisher.

Yeah but. Anyone can get access to guns and drugs? Maybe they shouldn’t though?

There are several reasons why people believe crime is up in Memphis.

Some cite mental health issues, while others say the poverty rate in Memphis is driving people to a survival mentally.

Hm.

It could also be that they’re doing this because they’re black, no?

A Philadelphia drag queen collapsed on stage mid-performance and died, prompting an outpouring of support for her family.

Valencia Prime was only 25, but already a fixture on the Philly drag scene, when she collapsed on stage on Sept. 12, according to local reports.

Prime identified as a trans woman and billed herself as “Philadelphia’s Plus Size Dancing Diva.” She was performing at Tabu nightclub in Center City while hosting her own live showcase, “Prime Time,” when tragedy struck.

“We mourn the loss of a very bright and rising star in the performance community and a person who was always full of life and positivity,” the venue posted on Instagram. “We say goodbye to Valencia Prime, but we will not forget the light you brought to the stage.”

The Philadelphia medical examiner listed Prime’s cause of death as heart disease and classified the manner of death as natural causes, 6ABC reported.

An argument over mayonnaise at a Downtown Atlanta Subway ended with one worker dead and another in the hospital.

Police say the shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. at a Subway located at a gas station on Northside Drive Southwest.

The owner of the Subway says the reason for the shooting was something small: a customer was mad about mayo.

“Believe it or not, it was about too much mayonnaise on his sandwich,” owner Willie Glenn said.

In this argument, police say the customer shot two Subway employees, leaving a 26-year-old woman dead and another 24-year-old woman rushed to surgery in critical condition. Atlanta police have arrested a 36-year-old man.

The victims were also black

“He decided to escalate the situation and from there — that’s when all hell broke loose,” Glenn said.

Glenn said the injured employee’s 5-year-old son was inside the store when the shooting started.

Glenn said the manager on duty returned fire at the suspect, but wasn’t able to hit him.

“I don’t know what the world is coming to especially with our youth. They seem to be so hot headed,” he said. “Everybody wants to carry a gun. Everybody wants to scare somebody wit ha gun. It’s scary out here.”

Crime scene tape surrounded the Subway as police investigated. The gunfire also shattered a window at the front of the store.

We’ve learned from one of the store owners the critically wounded employee is the sister of the woman killed.

All of this happened in front of the woman’s 5-year-old son.

“We don’t need people like that in society. If he’s willing to kill someone over mayonnaise then what else would he do,” Glenn said.

There were plenty of emotions at the restaurant on Northside Drive on Monday afternoon. Gerald Rose is the President of New Order National Human Rights Organization.

“That could have been my grandkid that lost their life over mayo and I don’t understand,” Rose said.

Bitch, you should understand.

Glenn said the two women in their 20s were sisters who had just started working at the store three weeks ago.

“It escalated in the store. He walked out the store and started shooting in the store and that’s when he hit one of my employees,” Willie Glenn said.

This all taking place in front of the worker’s five-year-old son, who watched his mom get shot. The child was back at the scene with a relative Monday as his mom is in critical condition at a local hospital.

“It was very senseless. Yes, too much mayo on a sandwich but an individual with a gun who thought that was the course of action to resolve about a sandwich,” Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said.

We need to be honest and say that though a lot of black murders are outrageous, some, like this one, are very justified, and extremely reasonable.

I think he should be released without bail, and this should serve as a warning to subway employees everywhere.

A woman in Mali has given birth to nine babies – two more than doctors had detected inside her womb – according to the country’s health ministry, joining a small pantheon of mothers of nonuplets.

Halima Cisse, 25, had been expected to give birth to seven babies, according to ultrasounds conducted in Morocco and Mali that missed two of the siblings. All were delivered by caesarean section.

The pregnancy of Cisse has fascinated the west African nation and attracted the attention of its leaders. When doctors in March said Cisse needed specialist care, the country’s transitional leader, Bah Ndaw, ordered that she be sent to Morocco, where she gave birth to five girls and four boys, according to Mali’s health ministry.

“The mother and babies are doing well so far,” Mali’s health minister, Fanta Siby, told Agence France-Presse, adding that she had been kept informed by the Malian doctor who accompanied Cisse to Morocco.

Doctors had been concerned about Cisse’s health, according to local press reports, as well as her babies’ chances of survival. Nonuplets are extremely rare. Medical complications in multiple births of this kind often mean that some of the babies do not survive.

I understand their concerns.

A US academic whose work focuses on Africa and the African diaspora has said she lied about being black.

Jessica Krug, an associate professor at George Washington University (GWU), admitted that she was in fact a white Jewish woman from Kansas City.

“I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie,” a blog post written under Ms Krug’s name read.

The university said it was investigating the blog post but would not comment further.

Ms Krug’s case, which has drawn surprise and condemnation from those who know her, bears strong parallels to Rachel Dolezal, a white race activist who claimed to be black.

Ms Dolezal first made headlines in 2015 when her parents outed her as white.

The former civil rights activist and African studies instructor had kept up the pretence of being African American for years, but said she “identified as black”.

Writing in a Medium post published on Thursday, Jessica Krug said she had falsely assumed identities “that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness”.

“To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child,” she wrote.

She described this behaviour as “the very epitome of violence, of thievery and appropriation, of the myriad ways in which non-Black people continue to use and abuse Black identities and cultures“, adding that she had continued the pretence even in her personal relationships.

She blamed her lies on mental health issues and trauma experienced in her early years, although she said this was not an excuse for her actions.

Her academic work, including the 2018 book “Fugitive Modernities: Kisama and the Politics of Freedom”, focuses on the politics and culture of African and African diaspora societies.

According to media reports, Ms Krug also used the name Jessica La Bombalera as an activist.

So, here’s the thing: she’s gone from pretending to be black to pretending to be white. She isn’t any more a standard white European than she is a standard negro.

Why is pretending to be one okay, and pretending to be the other is “the epitome of violence?”

When Jews identify as “white,” I feel that they are committing violence against me.

Mohadi begins by addressing economic worries and poses the question: “Is it government that is causing that?”

After a brief pause, he adds, “How are they causing it? I’m saying this because, one, we got our political independence, but the white man never gave us the knowledge of how the run the economy.”

As incredible as it may sound, there are still white people living in Zimbabwe, for whatever reason.

Over 4.3 million Zimbabweans face food insecurity as economic troubles hamper the country’s ability to prosper.

Zimbabwe was formerly a prosperous nation largely governed by Europeans and focused on productive farmland known as Rhodesia. After a violent civil war in the early 1980s, the new government of Zimbabwe began the process of seizing farmland from white owners and giving it to blacks as reparations. Since this policy began, Zimbabwe’s food supply has become entirely dependent on international sources.

If any darkies reading this ever have some kind of temporary collective enlightenment and want to improve their lot in life, I’ll tell you what you should do.

A French-American artist has raised eyebrows across Germany after a three-meter bronze statue which immortalizes drug dealers appeared in a Berlin park.

Artist Scott Holmquist set up his “Last Hero” sculpture on Sunday in Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg. Known nationwide as the “drug park,” the memorial stood for 24 hours, as agreed with the city.

Holmquist, who produces expressions of “complete depravity” according to his Twitter bio, said the piece was designed to reflect “solidarity and human rights for all – including for dealers.”

“It’s about how the reactions to park drug dealers crystallize fears, temptations, and desires, and at the same time shift the boundaries of control and solidarity,” Holmquist told B.Z.

The husband of the woman who MARTA police say was pushed in front of an oncoming train told Channel 2 Action News, had it not been for his daughter’s quick thinking, his wife would be dead.

The man said his wife and five daughters were in Atlanta for a girls’ weekend, when a man pushed his wife in front of the train as they were headed back to their hotel.

“Had Katie not jumped onto the tracks, Sue would not be here,” Jerry Wenszell, the victim’s husband, told Channel 2’s Nefertiti Jaquez.

The couple’s 28-year-old daughter was critically injured trying to save her mother’s life after they say the man pushed her for no apparent reason.

Police arrested Christopher Patrick Brooklin, 28, in connection with the incident. Tuesday, MARTA police said Brooklin appeared to have “some diminished mental capacity.”

Roy Antonio Davis, 26, was charged Friday on suspicion of murder and burglary, Santa Monica police said. He was already in police custody for an unrelated robbery when charges were filed against him.

Authorities said around 1 p.m. New Year’s Day, officers responded to a call about an elderly man who appeared unconscious in his home in the 2300 block of 34th Street. When officers entered the residence, they discovered the man was dead. He was identified as 88-year-old John Hautz.
