Anthony Cupp was so happy when he finally earned his new Nike Kevin Durant basketball shoes.

The 13-year-old gets straight A’s in advanced math at Lincoln Middle School in Warren. He just made the 8th-grade basketball team. By mowing his neighbor’s lawn, Anthony saved up enough money for the shoes he has been dreaming about.

He said he was shocked Thursday after school when an older, bigger kid snatched those shoes right off of his feet at MacArthur and Jewett Avenue while he was walking to his stepfather’s home.

“Five or 10 seconds it happened,” said Anthony. “I was shocked. I was just walking and then all of the sudden someone grabbed me and picked me up, and then he just dropped me onto the ground. Then he grabbed my ankles and took off my shoes and ran.”

His mother, Janiesa Cupp, saw him come home barefoot in the snow.

“Barefoot. Snowing. Wind. Freezing. He’s uttering to me, ‘My feet, my feet. I can’t feel my feet.’ It’s horrifying,” she said.

It was Anthony’s first time walking home from school. His mother was in therapy after a rough surgery and her car is broken down. Now, she’s heartbroken to know what her son earned on his own was taken from him.

“He saves and earns for the things that he wears and he does have nice things, and that’s his thing. That’s his hobby. He likes Nike. He loves sports. He wants to wear nice things and he works for it,” said Janiesa.

A Catford shopkeeper has been jailed after befriending, grooming and attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl who visited his store.

Gerard Morgan has been described as “every parent’s nightmare” after sexually abusing his young victim and offering her presents and compliments.

The 46-year-old, of Sandhurst Road, ran a shop that sold baseball caps in Sandhurst Road and first befriended the girl after she came to look at some of the caps in autumn 2012.

Morgan was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on June 30 to five years in prison for attempted rape, four years for grooming a child, and six months for sexual assault, to run concurrently.

The court heard how Morgan started offering the victim lifts in his car where he sexually abused her and bought her presents including an iPad mini.

Police were alerted to the abuse after she was taken to an address in Blackheath in January last year and offered an orange juice drink.

She passed out and woke hours later to find her clothes dishevelled and told someone who alerted officers.

Morgan was arrested in February last year and denied the allegations but his phone showed he had contacted the victim hundreds of times in the short period they had known each other.

He was charged in December last year and found guilty of all charges on June 30.

Detective Constable Ken Tran of the sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command (SOECA), who led the investigation, said: “Gerard Morgan is a dangerous offender who exploited a very vulnerable child for his own sexual needs.

“The victim has shown courage in reporting Morgan, who has now been convicted and will go to prison for a long time, safeguarding other children.

“On release he will be monitored as a registered sex offender.”

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Thomas, also of SOECA, added: “Gerard Morgan is every parent’s nightmare, a sex offender who targets children and tries to beguile them with presents and compliments.

“I believe there will be other victims and I urge them to tell us about what has happened.

“I would also encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual exploitation or grooming, or someone who may have information about offenders targeting children, to call us, so we can protect other children.”

The state ordered a daycare center to shut down on Friday, declaring that children there are in imminent danger.

The order stems from the Hall County Sheriff’s investigation of the daycare, Discovering Basics, in Clermont, and the arrest, Friday, of one of the daycare center’s teachers on a felony charge of child cruelty.

It’s the latest in the case of a Hall County toddler who was severely burned last week.

On Friday, sheriff’s investigators backed up the mom’s story that the child was burned while he was at the daycare the previous Friday, June 13.

But other parents who support Discovering Basics and believe in the staff are accusing the mom of harming her own child and then blaming it on the daycare.

For sheriff’s investigators, there is no doubt about what happened to 16-month-old Damon Gaddis, and where it happened to him.

“These injuries did occur at the daycare,” said Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicole Bailes, “And, more specifically, they occurred shortly after he arrived at the daycare” that morning.

Damon somehow suffered second- and third-degree burns, from scalding water. He is facing multiple surgeries.

At about 12:30 Friday, June 20, the Sheriff arrested Damon’s teacher, Eddye Pittmon, 55, accusing her of one felony count of child cruelty in the first degree for not getting Damon treatment for the burns right away — or ever.

Deputy Bailes said the investigation is not over, and other employees at the daycare may also be arrested and charged for not intervening, and for telling Damon’s mother when she picked him up that evening that he’d had an allergic reaction to a bug bite.

“He actually spent roughly eight hours in the condition that he was in prior to getting medical treatment by his mother,” after she picked him up, Bailes said. “He suffered for several hours” at the daycare that day.

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning issued an order Friday evening to shut down the daycare, saying children there are in imminent danger.

Under state law, the daycare has 48 hours – in this case, until Tuesday, June 24 — to issue a notice of appeal, and, if it does appeal, the daycare may remain open during the appeal.

The attorney for Discovering Basics, Jim Walters of Gainesville, did not return a message from 11Alive News Friday seeking comment.

Brad Clark’s two daughters, ages 2 and 5, attend Discovering Basics. Eddye Pittmon is their teacher. Clark is convinced that Damon’s mother, Megan Seabolt, injured her son and is blaming the daycare, and he believes the investigation will clear Pittmon.

“She’s always treated them great, she’s always been very competent, safe,” Clark said Friday. “If something happened to my girls, she was always the first one to notify me…There’s a lot of stuff that just doesn’t add up.”

Megan Seabolt told 11Alive News on Tuesday that she understands she’s under investigation, too. She declined to comment Friday, except to say, in her words, she’s glad that justice is being done and that the Sheriff is getting to the truth of what happened.

Eddye Pittmon was scheduled for a first court appearance before a Hall County Magistrate Judge on Saturday.​

Two and a half years after 12-year-old Garrett Phillips was found murdered in Potsdam, a suspect has been taken into custody. Potsdam police arrested Oral “Nick” Hillary, Clarkson University’s soccer coach, Thursday afternoon. Hillary was charged with second degree murder after a sealed indictment was delivered to St. Lawrence County court. The suspect pleaded not guilty and is in county jail without bail.

According to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain, Hillary is accused of suffocating and strangling the boy at his home in October 2011.

The arrest comes after four days of closed-door testimony before a grand jury that began Monday. In a texted statement, Rain called it “an emotional week.” She said Garrett Phillips’ mother, Tandy Cyrus, and several family members, were present at the arraignment. Rain said the Potsdam police “did a great job in pressing the case forward.”

Hillary was questioned in the initial investigation of the case, but never charged. He has sued the village of Potsdam and the police department for defamation, claiming leaks during the investigation negatively affected his reputation.

Hillary will appear before the court with his attorney to answer to the murder charge Friday at 10 am.

Authorites have announced an arrest in the shooting of an 8-year-old boy who was riding his bike in Chester County, and police say the suspect’s interview on Action News helped them make that arrest.

The shooting happened around 5:00 p.m. Friday in the unit block of West Main Street.

Police say 55-year-old Wayne Snowden fired a random shot that struck 8-year-old A.J. Hagner.

“Drunk” and “erratic” is how North Coventry Township Police described Snowden, the man Action News interviewed a few hours after investigators say he fired the shot.

Chester County investigators say Snowden walked out onto his porch and randomly shot his gun toward West Main Street.

A.J., who was riding his bike with a friend, was hit in the thigh barely missing a major artery.

“When you pick up a gun, it’s not just stupid if you’re going to do something like that, it’s reckless, it’s a great indifference to human life,” said Tom Hogan, Chester County District Attorney.

A.J. was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in stable condition. He was released Saturday.

The investigation lead to Snowden and his home where officers say they found a .9mm glock with a spent shell casing jammed inside.

However it appears Snowden’s words to Action News may be the biggest piece of evidence against him.

“I thought it was astonishing. A lot of the things he said to the media last night were very incriminating as far as I’m concerned,” said Chief Robert Schurr, North Coventry Township Police.

“We didn’t actually know it was him until they brought him out of the house today and we were shocked,” said Christine Fry, neighbor.

After the arrest, investigators took pictures and gathered more evidence at Snowden’s home.

However, down the street, it was a happy homecoming for A.J. His family didn’t want to speak on camera but neighbors shared a photograph of the second grader. He was bandaged up but surrounded by his friends.

“He just looks tired but his mom says he wants to go to school on Monday – brave kid,” said Fry.

Snowden, who remains in custody, faces Aggravated Assault and related charges.

A ‘PREDATORY’ attacker who raped a frightened schoolgirl and later sexually assaulted the victim, has been jailed for 34 months.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Abdul Basit, now 22, and who carried out the rape on the teenager when he was about 17, left his victim shocked, distraught and sobbing. She was to tell the police she had been attacked in the early hours and described the defendant as ‘stinking of booze’.

The hearing was told Basit, said to have a drink problem, has been served with ‘more than one abduction notice’ relating to girls under 16.

Prosecutor Lisa Worsley said: “He has even been watched by one of the teams in the area which look after young girls likely to get targeted by predatory adult males.”

Basit, from Burnley, but of no fixed address, had admitted rape and sexual assault.

He was ordered to sign the sexual offenders register and was given a 10-year sexual offences prevention order.

Miss Worsley told the court the defendant was interviewed about the rape on January 30. He denied he had done it and claimed the victim was making up the allegation simply to seek attention.

When questioned over the second offence, in which he made the victim touch him, Basit denied sexual assault.

He was charged in March. The defendant had 11 previous convictions for 15 offences, including a record for violence.

Andrew Nuttall, defending Basit, said: “He finds it difficult, for understandable reasons, to talk about it. He’s ashamed of it, of that there is no doubt.

“Fundamentally, he is fully aware of what he has done and fundamentally, he is fully aware that effectively, it has ruined his life. He realised the best thing is to hold his hand up and say he has done this and say, in a sense, he needs some help.”

The barrister continued: “He presents as a rather sad individual. He is somewhat cowed by the circumstances he finds himself in.”

Mr Nuttall said Basit was fully aware of the impact on the victim and that she would have been frightened.

Sentencing, Judge Andrew Woolman told Basit his pre-sentence report showed some disturbing attitudes that he seemed to have.

He said: “The police are concerned about what you might do next and, to some extent, this court shares those concerns.”

The judge added: “Had you been older when you committed the offence of rape, the sentence would have been much longer.”

A 6-year-old Parkland girl is safe today because of her smart, quick actions when two men tried to kidnap her in broad daylight in her own neighborhood.

The drama unfolded Wednesday as the little girl, Savanna Norman, was walking home after playing and jumping on the trampoline at the home of her friend, 9-year-old Raquelle Pittenger, who lives right across the street.

“I looked both ways, and there was no one coming but … then I went halfway across the street, two guys came out of nowhere,” Savanna says.

And what happened next is every parent’s nightmare.

“They grabbed me,” says Savanna.

But Savanna’s smart moves made her mom very proud.

“Run … and kick … and punch,” says the little girl.

“What’s the No. 1 thing you did that got everybody’s attention around the whole neighborhood?” asks Savanna’s mom, Amy Norman.

“I kicked him,” says Savanna. “I screamed loud.”

This 6-year-old knows “stranger danger” well.

“‘Cause mommy teaches me,” she says.

Amy saw the attempted kidnapping from her front window, and dashed out the door.

“My heart was pounding,” she says.

Meanwhile, her 9-year-old friend Raquelle watched from steps away.

“It made me feel scared and terrible,” she says.

It was a dangerous situation – derailed by a smart little girl who remembered the right thing to do.

“Very proud,” says her mom. “What happened … was very scary for all of us.”

Now the Normans are considering moving from their neighborhood – or at the very least putting a fence up around their house.

The prime suspect, Jakeel Rashon Mason, was arrested and booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment. He is being held on $150,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Savanna’s family just learned that Mason lives only a few blocks from their house.

A man’s attempt to kidnap a 10-year-old girl on Feb. 24 was stopped by a group of students who witnessed the abduction happening and threw rocks at the would-be-kidnapper.

Tyrone Ferguson, 36, was reportedly pulling the young girl away by her hair when the other students interfered.

The 10-year-old girl and her eight-year-old brother were walking to Mary McLeod Bethune School in North Philadelphia when Ferguson, wearing all black clothing, black gloves, and a black ski mask, is said to have approached them.

He allegedly told the children to “come here,” and grabbed the boy’s backpack.

The boy’s sister then rushed over and freed him, at which point Ferguson reportedly grabbed the girl’s hair and pulled her towards him.

“Ultimately that male let go of the young male child and then attacked the female and tried to take her…as well,” said Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit Capt. John Darby.

The suspect was knocked down when other children began throwing rocks at him. The suspect then fled, and the girl escaped from his hold.

The children reported the incident to the school, and the school contacted the police.

Darby said that the police force, recognizing “the threat level,” began working almost immediately. Darby described Ferguson’s behavior as bold, noting that it “definitely creates a threat to that community.”

Ferguson’s record includes a slew of previous convictions, including drug incidents and time served in 2001 for corruption of a minor.

As police presence increased in the area, Ferguson, who lives nearby the school, was quickly identified as a suspect; one of the alleged victims also recognized him. On Feb. 25, the day after the attempted kidnapping, Ferguson turned himself into the Special Victims Unit.

According to police, he had a cut on his forehead, which could have been caused by the kids throwing rocks at him.

He now faces counts of robbery, attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, simple assault, luring a child and related counts. A court date was set on Monday; because he was unable to post 10 percent of his $500,000 bail, he has remained behind bars since his arrest.

Nonetheless, Ferguson’s friends and neighbors maintain that they’ve got the wrong man. One neighbor insists Ferguson only turned himself in because he was scared and felt pressure from the police.

“That ain’t him!” said one of his neighbors. “That ain’t his character. I know him. He don’t drive no car. This is his neighborhood.”

A Memphis mother is out on bond, accused of helping her teen daughter beat up a 15-year-old girl.

Police say Angela Thomas led a whole group of teenagers to the 15-year-old’s house and even joined in on the attack, which also hurt the girl’s father.

The Crane family, who lives in the Berclair neighborhood, says they are living in fear of not knowing what could happen next after being attacked by eight teenage girls and a mother.

Billy Crane’s 15-year-old daughter has a black eye and a busted lip.

“The mother runs up and is cussing me in my face and at the time, the little kids just ran around and up in the house,” said Crane. “I was stunned. I was like what? In my house? Then the mama followed in behind them.”

Police say Thomas joined in on the beating of the 15-year-old.

Billy says he struggled to get her and the rest of girls out of his house.

“I got scratches all over my neck and back.”

Billy says after the girls beat up his daughter, they came outside and one of them grabbed a brick and threw it at him.

“I saw it out it of the corner of my eye, a brick coming and just tried to dodge it.”

The brick hit him in the arm, leaving a yellowing bruise.

Billy says this violence Thursday evening came after weeks of his daughter being bullied at Kingsbury High School.

He’s even reported Thomas’s daughter to police for the torment, but Billy says nothing was done.

Now his 15-year-old is sleeping in the middle of the house, away from windows, because he is afraid bullets will be next.

”When they were leaving, they were saying they were going to shoot the house up, so now I am worried about that. How do you protect your kids against getting shot?”

Thomas got out of jail Sunday by paying a $15,000 bond.

Police haven’t said whether any of the juveniles were arrested for the attack.

Kingsbury administrators say they had no reports of the bullying, but plan to look into it.

A Fort Mill mom wants to send a message to parents after she caught her 15-year-old daughter having sex with a man who she met on a popular social media site.

The man claimed to be a teenager.

The mother held him at gunpoint until Sheriff’s Deputies arrived.

To protect the identity of the daughter, the mother’s name won’t be mentioned in this article.

The Fort Mill mother describes the emotional and terrifying moments after she saw a strange man in her home early Sunday morning.

“If he tried to escape, I would have shot him,” she said.

Around 3:30 Sunday morning, she noticed an unfamiliar car in her driveway off of Munn Road.

She says she sent her oldest daughter to check the home and when she did, she found Addison Pittman in one of her bathrooms.

The mother quickly grabbed a BB gun.

“I had it (the gun) held just like this. I had it point towards his chest and I held him,” she said.

She held up Pittman until Sheriff Deputies arrived.

At first, the mother thought Pittman was a burglar until her 15-year-old daughter revealed she invited the man over to have sex after the daughter met Pittman on the popular social media website Kik.

According to Deputies’ reports, Pittman and the daughter had been in contact for 5 months and she knew he was 23.

Pittman told the mother he was 17 and she didn’t find out his actual age until deputies showed up.

“If I knew he was 23 at the time, I probably would have pulled this BB gun and shot him,” said the mother.

What scares this Fort Mill mother even more is the thought of what could have happened.

“What’s to say he wouldn’t have choked her or had a weapon on him, killed her and I would have found her dead,” she said.

The mother now has this message for parents.

“Talk to your kids often even though they tell you that they deserve their privacy, and they do, but to an extent.”

Pittman was charged with 3^rd degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

He was released on $15,000 bond.

The mom says the daughter didn’t get off lightly. She took away her cell phone, internet privileges and she’s grounded.

The mother and is urging anyone else who had contact with Pittman, call the York County Sheriff’s office.
