The Biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with private insurance access to over-the-counter birth control pills and other contraceptives at no cost, the White House said on Monday.

The rule, which expands a federal mandate requiring health insurers to cover preventative care services at no cost to patients under the Affordable Care Act, is being proposed by the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury and would come into effect in 2025 if finalized.

“This rule, once finalized, will expand contraception coverage for 52 million women of reproductive age with private health insurance,” White House Gender Policy Council Director Jennifer Klein said during a briefing.

“For the first time ever, women would be able to obtain over-the-counter contraception without a prescription at no additional cost, and health plans would have to cover even more prescribed contraceptives without cost sharing,” she said.

Perrigo Co’s, opens new tab Opill is currently the only daily birth control pill approved for sale without a prescription by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but the proposed rule covers other forms of over-the-counter contraceptives, including emergency contraception such as morning after pill Plan B, spermicides, birth control sponges, and condoms.

The rule will also require that health plans cover all FDA-approved contraceptive drugs and some devices, including IUDs, without cost sharing in many cases.

New York City’s fight against rats has entered the furry beasts’ bedrooms, with the City Council approving a measure to lace rat traps with rodent birth control.

The bill, which passed Thursday, green-lighted a program that will put a contraceptive pellet called ContraPest in special rat-accessible containers across parts of the city, according to PIX 11.

If all goes well with the plan, rats will ingest the contraceptive and become sterilized — thus preventing them from filling city streets with successive generations of scamperers.

The bill was dubbed “Flaco’s Law” after the famed owl of the same name who escaped from the Central Park Zoo in 2023, captured the hearts of New Yorkers — and was then tragically found dead after consuming rat poison.

Flaco’s Law seeks to find a way to mitigate the city’s rate population through means that would prevent other animals from being harmed by accident, backers say.

“We can’t poison our way out of this, we cannot kill our way out of this,” Council member Shaun Abreu said while first introducing the bill in April.

In a step to oppose this, conservative President Andrzej Duda on Friday vetoed a law aimed at liberalising access to the morning-after pill.

The coalition that came to power in Poland in December has made no secret of its desire to see Poland ‘move forward’ on abortion and the promotion of homosexuality—in a break with the policy of the previous government. On February 22nd, the lower house of the Polish parliament passed a law by 224 votes to 196, authorising access to the ‘morning-after pill’ from the age of 15 without a prescription, whereas until then, a doctor’s prescription was required to obtain it.

On Friday, March 29th, in response to the parliamentary vote, Polish President Andrzej Duda, a member of PiS, vetoed the law. He explained in a press release that he “cannot accept legal solutions allowing children under the age of 18 to have access to contraceptive drugs without medical supervision and without taking into account the role and responsibility of parents,” by virtue of “standards for the protection of children’s health.”

The presidential text states that no satisfactory argument has been put forward as to the need to open up the supply of such a pill to 15-year-old girls and that it must echo parents’ requests. Duda is therefore calling for the law to be re-examined while saying he is open to the administration of such a pill to women over the age of eighteen.

This places the president in a tug-of-war with liberal Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who has no intention of conceding defeat on what is considered to be a highly sensitive and symbolic issue. The issue of softening restrictions on the morning-after pill is seen by the liberal government as the first step towards dismantling the child protection legislation currently in force in Poland, where abortion is only permitted in cases of rape, incest, or serious danger to the mother’s health. Following Duda’s veto, Tusk suggested the need for a “plan B,” not in the form of a law but in the form of a regulation scheduled for early May, which would allow the morning-after pill to be dispensed directly by pharmacists.

Opill, the first birth control pill approved for over-the-counter distribution, is now being shipped to retailers and pharmacies, the company behind the pill, Perrigo, announced on Monday. It will be available in stores and online later this month.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Opill last year, paving the way for the United States to join the dozens of countries that have already made over-the-counter birth control pills available. Opill, which works by using the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy, is meant to be taken every day around the same time and, when used as directed, is 98% effective.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill, paving the way for millions of women in the country to purchase birth control without prescription.

The daily contraceptive Opill, sold by Perrigo (PRGO.N), was first approved for prescription use in 1973, and the over-the-counter approval allows people to obtain it without first seeing a healthcare provider.

Perrigo will share its pricing plan for the pill next week. It will be available in stores and online in the first quarter of next year.

“Today marks an important step in the drive toward meaningful access to essential healthcare for Americans,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement.

Women taking oral contraceptive pills may have an increased risk of depression — especially shortly after starting on the pill.

That’s one of the findings from a large study of more than 264,000 women, which also finds that teenage girls are at the highest risk.

In fact, women who were teenagers when they began to use birth control pills had a 130% higher rate of depression.

The increased rate among adult users was 92%, according to the study authors.

The researchers studied combination contraceptive pills, which contain progestogen, a compound resembling the hormone progesterone, and estrogen.

The study revealed that the increase in rates of depression declined when women continued using contraceptive pills after the first two years.

But teenage users of contraceptive pills still had an increased rate of depression even after they stopped using the pill. That effect was not seen in adult users of the pill.

Claire Knight of Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, said the risk was small and should not discourage most people from taking the pill.

It’s bizarre to me that this is being presented as some kind of revelation. Andrew Anglin has been saying for ten years on this very website you are presently reading that birth control pills cause breast cancer. He’s also been saying they cause cervical cancer, and that HPV does not even exist.

That last thing might be a revelation – if they announced that actually, HPV is a hoax designed to stop people from having unprotected sex (babies) and to cover for birth control pills (the real culprit), it would be very interesting.

But both breast and cervical cancer are listed as being caused by birth control pills on cancer.gov. Technically, they use the language “increase the risk of” rather than “cause,” but that is literally the same thing. No one says “smoking increases the risk of lung cancer.” The warning on the label says “smoking causes cancer” (this is also more or less a hoax, but that’s a topic for another time).

There is a very easy way to not get pregnant: don’t have sex. We have only one example in all of human history where a woman got pregnant without having sex. It is a tried and true method.

Beyond that: women can only get pregnant within a 72-hour window every month. So, I mean – they could just not have sex during that period. But of course, that period is when they are in heat, i.e., it’s when they want to have sex.

This just demonstrates how utterly irresponsible women are when they are allowed to make their own choices – “I want to have sex with anyone I feel like having sex with whenever I want, and also do everything else I want to do whenever I feel like it, but I want there to never be any consequences to anything I do because nothing is my fault and I shouldn’t be responsible for anything.”

Taliban fighters have stopped the sale of contraceptives in two of Afghanistan’s main cities, claiming their use by women is a western conspiracy to control the Muslim population.

The Guardian has learned that the Taliban has been going door to door, threatening midwives and ordering pharmacies to clear their shelves of all birth control medicines and devices.

“They came to my store twice with guns and threatened me not to keep contraceptive pills for sale. They are regularly checking every pharmacy in Kabul and we have stopped selling the products,” said one store owner in the city.

A veteran midwife, who did not want to be named, said she had been threatened several times. She said she was told by a Taliban commander: “You are not allowed to go outside and promote the western concept of controlling population and this is unnecessary work.”

Other pharmacists in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif confirmed that they have been ordered not to stock any birth control medicines.

“Items such as birth control pills and Depo-Provera injections are not allowed to be kept in the pharmacy since the start of this month, and we are too afraid to sell the existing stock,” another shop owner in Kabul said.

It is the latest attack on women’s rights by the Taliban who, since coming to power in August 2021, have ended higher education for girls, closed universities to young women, forced women out of their jobs and restricted their ability to leave their homes. Restricting contraceptives will be a significant blow in a country with an already fragile healthcare system.

One in every 14 Afghan women dies of causes related to pregnancy and it is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to give birth.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health in Kabul has not issued any official statement on the issue and the UNFPA representative in Afghanistan did not respond to requests for comment.

Taliban fighters patrolling in the streets in Kabul told sources that “contraceptive use and family planning is a western agenda”.

For Zainab, 17, who was married two years ago in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the ban on contraceptives was a shock when she was told by her midwife last week.

Zainab, who has an 18-month-old daughter, is worried. “I was secretly using contraceptives to avoid immediate pregnancy. I want to raise my daughter well with proper health and education facilities but it shattered my dreams when the midwife last week informed me that she had no contraceptive pills and injections to offer me,” she said.

“I left education to get married and I don’t want my daughter’s fate to be the same as mine. I seek a different future for my daughter. The last hope to plan my life has ended,” said Zainab.

Shabnam Nasimi, an Afghan-born social activist in the UK, said: “The Taliban’s control not only over women’s human right to work and study, but now also over their bodies, is outrageous.

“It is a fundamental human right to have access to family planning and contraception services free of coercion. Such autonomy and agency are essential components of women’s rights such as the right to equality, non-discrimination, life, sexual health, reproductive health, and other basic human rights.”

It’s not a “fundamental human right” is mental illness.

Women always want children, just like every other female animal wants children. If they believe they don’t want children, they are sick. There is something very wrong with them and they need help.
