The number of babies born in Brussels dropped sharply last year due to potential parents’ fears for the future, migration out of the city and other demographic trends.

A report published by the regional agency Perspective Brussels on Monday shows that there were 13,987 babies born in the Brussels-Capital Region in 2024, down by 757 since 2023 and by 4,600 since 2010, the year when the city’s fertility rate peaked.

The report refers to the drop as an “unprecedented demographic situation”. The Region has always had a lower fertility rate than the rest of the country but the trend has accelerated due to a number of demographic changes. according to the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (IBSA).

The report identifies four main reasons why Brussels residents choose to reproduce less, or not at all. A portion of residents are choosing to have fewer children out of fear of an uncertain future caused by “economic, geopolitical and climate instability.”

Women want to have babies later and later, and while this reduces the amount of babies born to young mothers, the decline is not offset by a high natality rate among older women. The overall rate therefore decreases.

Brussels is an ethnically diverse city and 45% of “women of childbearing age” (between 15 and 49) are of non-Belgian nationality. This group’s fertility rate has fallen at a faster rate than that of Belgian women, which IBSA says is a result of the majority of new arrivals to Brussels being of European origin. The sale of disposable electronic cigarettes is banned in Belgium on health and environmental grounds from 1 January. A ban on outdoor smoking in Milan came into force on the same day, as EU countries discuss tighter controls on tobacco.

Announcing the ban last year, Belgium’s health minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, described electronic cigarettes as an “extremely harmful” product that damages society and the environment.

“Disposable e-cigarettes is a new product simply designed to attract new consumers,” he told the Associated Press. “E-cigarettes often contain nicotine. Nicotine makes you addicted to nicotine. Nicotine is bad for your health.”

A Belgian publisher has withdrawn the sale of a comic book after controversy erupted over the books’ racist depiction of black people and ‘hyper-sexualised’ images of women.

The publisher Dupuis announced that its graphic novel, Spirou and the Blue Gorgon, would be removed from shops after the book was called out on social media.

In an announcement last week, Dupuis said it was “profoundly sorry if this album has been shocking and hurtful”, adding that it had been done in a “caricatured style of representation from another era”.

The publisher added that it was “more aware than ever of our moral duty and the importance of comics,” adding: “We take full responsibility today for this error of judgment.”

Spirou and the Blue Gorgon, a satirical tale of so-called “eco-terrorists”, junk food and plastic rubbish, was first published in September 2023. The comic book was widely reviewed in the Francophone press back at the time of its release, and there was no controversy around it.

However, in October 2024, a TikTok video denounced its portrayal of black people and women. The viral video led to a great deal of criticism. One internet user noted that all the white characters were human beings, while black characters were depicted as monkeys in the book. The user also pointed out that the women were typically drawn with plunging cleavage and tiny waists, and were “hyper-sexualised”.

After the publisher’s decision, local media reported that approximately 30,000 copies would be removed from sale, a decision said to be the first of its kind in Belgium.

A Belgian civil court has fined two Catholic prelates after they denied a woman entry into a diaconate formation program.

According to the Belgian newspaper De Morgen, the woman, Veer Dusauchoit, asked the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels to register for training as a deacon in June 2023 and again in October 2023.

Dusauchoit made her first request to Cardinal Jozef De Kesel and her second to Archbishop Luc Terlinden after De Kesel’s 2023 resignation at age 76. Both times, her request to join the four-year diaconal training program was denied.

The two prelates will have to pay 1,500 euro (about $1,605) each, the court ordered.

The court in Mechelen ruled that the archbishops made a mistake when refusing Dusauchoit entry to the program but did not address the question of actually ordaining Dusauchoit. According to De Morgen, the court cannot overturn the archbishop’s refusal or decide in his place who will be admitted to deacon training.

“We received the verdict yesterday afternoon, are now studying it, and will then decide how to proceed,” a spokesman for the archdiocese said in response to a request from the website katholisch.de on Wednesday.

The Catholic Church teaches that holy orders — of which there are three degrees of diaconate, priesthood, and episcopate — is the sacrament of apostolic ministry and is reserved to baptized men.

Pope Francis has reiterated numerous times that holy orders are “reserved to men.”

Dusauchoit, 62, has served at her parish church in a Flemish part of Belgium for years, according to De Morgen. As her parish no longer has a priest, Dusauchoit got involved with arranging funerals and scriptural readings, katholish.de reported.

In an April 22 op-ed, Dusauchoit described herself as a “religious, socially committed, feminist, and ecologically inspired woman.” She claimed that as late as the 1970s in Belgium, wives of deacons were required to attend deacon training together with their husbands.

“Women in the Church are still not fully appreciated and given their equal place,” she wrote.

“Out of that frustration, from the conviction that training as a deacon can help the Church grow further and at the same time from the determination not to break with the Church, I decided to register for training as a deacon,” she wrote.

Woman deacons is right up there with the gay marriage thing.

Child protection agencies warned that cocaine gangs, which are exploiting the “unlimited” supply of vulnerable African children at their disposal, are using brutal means to control their victims, including torture and rape if they fail to sell enough drugs.

A separate recent assessment by EU police forces investigating serious organised crime and human trafficking concluded: “Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and France presented several concrete cases of the exploitation of hundreds of north African minors, recruited by drug trafficking networks to sell narcotics.”

Eric Garbar, head of human trafficking and smuggling at the Belgian federal judicial police, is one of the officers leading attempts to tackle the exploitation of unaccompanied children by criminal networks. He said: “With African minors, essentially Moroccan and Algerian, the most important area is the exploitation by OCGs [organised crime groups] involved in criminal activities such as drug trafficking.

“What we have in the EU is an unstoppable low-cost human resource from Africa.”

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been ordered to pay damages in the sum of €27,000 to a Belgian right-wing lawmaker for unfairly limiting his reach on the social media platform, otherwise known as “shadowbanning.”

The Antwerp Court of Appeal ruled on Monday in favor of Tom Vandendriessche, an MEP standing for reelection as the lead candidate for the Flemish separatist party, Vlaams Belang, in Belgium.

The court held that Facebook had unfairly censored Vandendriessche’s account, which currently boasts 234,000 followers, back in February 2021 and had failed to act “in accordance with the principle of good faith” and did not offer “sufficient procedural guarantees” for users who were subjected to such measures. His account was subsequently blocked in May of the same year.

Meta claimed it had acted in accordance with its community guidelines and accused the Belgian lawmaker of posting inappropriate content on the platform, leading to the shadowban. However, Vandendriessche was informed by the social media giant the ban had been lifted at the end of 2021, a claim he contested, as his organic reach remained artificially low.

No ruling was made on this claim, as the court held there was insufficient evidence to prove the account remained subject to adverse measures.

The judgment overruled the court of first instance, which ruled that Belgian courts did not have jurisdiction to decide on the matter, leading to an appeal to the higher court by Vandendriessche.

In a statement following the ruling, the Vlaams Belang politician hailed “a first victory against Big Tech,” insisting that “anonymous technocrats should never dictate what can be said and heard.”

“I hope that this ruling makes it clear to Facebook that they can no longer censor me, and many citizens with me, without consequences,” he added.

Vandendriessche was awarded €27,279 in damages, equal to the amount he had been forced to spend to contest the decision in the courts.

Former MP Dries Van Langenhove has been sentenced to a year in jail and fined 16,000 by a court in Ghent after he was found guilty of breaches of racism and negationism laws.

The Criminal Court also found the 30-year-old founder of conservative nationalist youth movement, Schild & Vrienden, guilty of the illegal “possession of weapons” in relation to pepper spray and sentenced him to 10 months in jail which was suspended by the court.

Flemish News outlet VRT reported that Van Langenhove’s civil rights have also “been revoked” for a period of 10 years meaning he cannot run for public office during that period.

Van Langenhove and six other members of the youth movement were tried on charges including hatred, racism, and Holocaust denial in relation to material shared among private group chats although Van Langenhove denies sending the material himself.

One of the defendants described by VRT News as Van Langenhove’s “right hand man” received an eight month suspended sentence along with an 8,000 fine, while four others received 10-month suspended sentences and were each fined 8,000.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron said a bill on assisted dying would go before parliament in May, speaking in an interview published Sunday, March 10.

Only adults with full control of their judgment, suffering an incurable and life-threatening illness in the short- to medium-term and whose pain cannot be relieved will be able to “ask to be helped to die,” Macron told newspapers La Croix and Libération.

Minors and patients suffering from psychiatric or neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s will not be eligible, he said.

If medical professionals give their consent, a lethal substance will be prescribed for the patient, who can administer it themselves or with the help of a third party if they cannot physically do so. The third party can be a volunteer, the doctor or the nurse treating the patient, according to the text, while the substance can be administered at the patient’s home, in care homes for the elderly or care centers.

Medical experts will have 15 days to respond to the request for help to die and an approval will be valid for three months, during which time the patient can retract, Macron said. He said that if medical professionals rejected the request, the patient could consult another medical team or appeal.
