All of the various “Second Life” type video games failed.

VR sets are expensive and they make you ill.

Why did anyone think “Metaverse” was a good idea?

Reuters:

Wall Street is losing patience over Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg’s enormous and experimental bets on his metaverse project that helped drive up the company’s overall costs by a fifth in the third quarter.

Investors rushed to dump Meta Platforms Inc’s stock after hours, pushing it down 20% and wiping $67 billion off its market value after the company posted its fourth straight decline in quarterly profit.

The Facebook-parent said its overall expenses could rise as much as 16% next year and anticipates that operating losses at Reality Labs – the unit responsible for bringing the metaverse to life – “will grow significantly” next year.

One Meta shareholder had recently voiced concerns calling the company’s investments “super-sized and terrifying”. Analysts on Wednesday called them “confusing and confounding” and Meta’s inability to cut costs “extremely disturbing”.

On a post-earnings conference call, Jefferies analyst Brent Thill asked executives: “I think kind of summing up how investors are feeling right now is that there are just too many experimental bets versus proven bets on the core … I think everyone would love to hear why you think this pays off.”

In the July-September quarter, losses at Reality Labs ballooned to a whopping $3.67 billion from $2.63 billion a year earlier. Revenue nearly halved.

“It would be a mistake for us to not focus on any of these areas that will be fundamentally important to our future,” Zuckerberg said on the call.

“I know that sometimes when we ship a product … people say: ‘Hey, you’re spending all this money, and you’ve produced this thing,’ and I think that’s not really the right way to think about it.”

“…we’re doing leading work that will become … eventually mature products at different cadences in different periods of time over the next five to 10 years.”

He spoke about the company’s various efforts, including a recently unveiled virtual and mixed reality headset called Quest Pro that is priced at $1,500 and a social metaverse platform where people can express themselves via avatars.

He said Meta is investing in two other areas: augmented reality and neural interfaces.

Yeah. Presumably, the plan was some kind of literal Matrix type thing made to tie in with the “neural interface” brain chips that are being developed.

But it would have been easy to develop this and keep it on the back burner, rather than putting it front and center and blowing all of this capital on it. That was just stupid.

It was a retarded business move.

We may actually see the fall of Facebook. Zuckerberg has failed at literally every point he needed to innovate. His only successes, other than stealing Facebook and launching it in the first place, was buying out other companies. He actually managed to destroy many companies he bought, but there was success with instagram and WhatsApp. He basically destroyed the latter. Aside from failing to innovate at all to compete with Telegram, he for whatever reason announced that he was going to start reading everyone’s messages. I have talked to normies who say they stopped using it over privacy concerns.

Elon Musk is planning on making Twitter a much bigger project than it currently is. Musk is also working on a brain chip, but he didn’t do something stupid like launch a VR world.

The big question now is: will Facebook get a government bailout?

Google Reveals New Augmented Reality Tool to Help Users Respect Social Distancing Edict https://www.anglinarchive.com/2020/05/30/google-reveals-new-augmented-reality-tool-to-help-users-respect-social-distancing-edict/ Sat, 30 May 2020 00:00:00 +0000

Hello friend! Are you respecting the magic distance number?

Remember that if you don’t stay 2 meters away from people, people will die. People you know may die. Your family may die. You might die.

To help you honor this magic and totally science-based and science-backed number, we here at GOOGLE CORP have developed a tool to measure distance in real time, because we’re always thinking about new ways to help your well-being.

We’re very helpful.

We’ve called it Sodar, because people like soda and think of sonars as high tech stuff.

We’re very smart, by the way.

Daily Mail:

Google has released a new augmented reality (AR) feature that helps its users follow social distancing rules during the coronavirus pandemic.

The free ‘Sodar’ tool uses a phone’s camera to superimpose an AR ring with a 6.5-foot (two metre) radius around the user.

As the ring is AR, it moves whenever the user moves their phone to keep a constant indicator of whether other people in public places are keeping their distance.

Two metres, or about 6.5 foot, is the UK government’s recommended distance between two people out in public to help prevent the virus from spreading.

Google hopes Sodar – an abbreviation of ‘social’ and ‘radar’ – will provide a more accurate way for users to maintain distancing guidelines.

The new app, which is only available on Chrome for Google’s Android operating system, uses ‘WebXR’ – Google’s software blueprint for immersive experiences.

…

Sodar isn’t an app, meaning it can’t be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Instead, Android users have to visit the dedicated Sodar website in a browser and click the green ‘launch’ button to start the AR experience.

Alternatively, Android users can start using the free tool by scanning a QR code on the desktop version of the Sodar site.

‘With a supported device, scan the QR code with your phone camera to take you to the mobile site,’ the site says.

Google is yet to confirm to MailOnline which versions of its Android software support the tool.

Some Android phones also won’t have a QR code scanner built into their camera and will have to download one from the app store.

You may be thinking “but this is dumb, people will need to walk looking at their phones!” but isn’t that what people were already doing anyways back when they were allowed to leave their homes?

We Google people really are people with human DNA, and we’re always looking for the least intrusive ways to help other fellow humans have more safety.

It won’t require any change to people’s daily routines, because we’re not evil.

You shouldn’t be evil either, so you should use Sodar and stay away from humans.

Cyberpunk News: Apple Investing in Augmented Reality https://www.anglinarchive.com/2019/08/01/cyberpunk-news-apple-investing-in-augmented-reality/ Thu, 01 Aug 2019 00:00:00 +0000 Roy Batty

In the near future, we’re going to have virtual reality overlaid on reality reality – augmented reality.

This is going to be dystopian AF, but whatever.

Observer:

Within the expanding realm of artwork that utilizes emerging technologies, there’s a lot of chatter about the possibilities of VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality). The success of these two genres can essentially be boiled down to the importance of user experience: a VR or AR experience has to make the user feel simultaneously transported and absorbed, which requires a suspension of disbelief. Disbelief, invariably, is linked with criticism, and just imagine how tantalizing the notion of suspending criticism sounds to powerful tech companies.

Today, Apple announced that they would be offering a series of “AR experiences” that people can sign up for in their stores around the world, and that these experiences are the product of a collaboration with seven lauded contemporary artists. Additionally, the company said, there will be an AR art installation on view in every Apple store around the globe.

So here’s the thing: reality is becoming increasingly ugly to look at.

The urban sprawl and the realities of life in the West are going to get too depressing to look at for long.

Enter augmented reality.

They’re going to use it to cover all the cracks in the facade. Why bother fixing buildings and combatting litter and sprawl when people can put some glasses on and all of a sudden they’re gone? No need to invest money into physical improvements when you’ve got people willing to look the other way, just to make their days more bearable.

But then when you add body dysmorphia and trannies to the mix, things get downright weird.

People are going to be able to force you to see them as they want to be seen. After all, virtual reality is just your surroundings giving your user interface suggestions about what to show you. Other people with virtual reality goggles or (eventually) maybe even augmented eyeballs are going to be able to participate in that process.

That means fat girls projecting an image of a thin girl. Men projecting an image of a woman. Non-Whites projecting images of the Aryan Whites they wish to be and Whites projecting the image of Dalit browns because they hate their natural skin color.

And there won’t be an opt-out clause. People who don’t participate in the ameliorated reality will be punished first socially, then professionally, and then eventually, legally.

Because the big lie that augmented reality can enable requires most people to be actively participating in it as reciprocal partners. Only poor people, old people and the blind will be left untouched. We will literally all live in a dream world of illusions and no one will complain because the real world will be too stark and bleak to want to stay in for too long.

This is the future that awaits us, bros.

Best come to terms with it now.

Microsoft to Release New Hololens Augmented Reality System https://www.anglinarchive.com/2018/06/14/microsoft-to-release-new-hololens-augmented-reality-system/ Thu, 14 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 Adrian Sol

This is actually way more important than VR.

A few years back, Microsoft came out with their “Hololens” system, which was a headset that projected 3d images onto the environment around you, creating a sort of “mixed” reality, combining virtual objects with normal ones.

It was pretty sick, tbh.

But it was also like, several grand. So it was aimed mostly at professionals, rather than normal people.

However, it seems like Microsoft is actually working hard to improve the tech and bring it to a wider audience.

Thurrot:

It was a little over a year ago, that I broke the news that Microsoft had stopped the development of HoloLens V2 and was pushing forward to V3. Since then, I have been asked about a million times for more information about the upcoming device but if you know where to look, the company is developing the hardware in broad daylight.

Yeah I mean, it was cool as a scifi sort of tech demo…

Based on documents I was able to view, Microsoft is still targeting a Q1 release of the next gen headset. Additionally, the company is referring to the project internally as Sydney.

The device, according to the documents, will be lighter, more comfortable to wear, and have significantly improved holographic displays. But most importantly, it will cost significantly less than the current version of the HoloLens.

In other words, it’ll be far more accessible to people, and thus will likely yield new types of applications.

All of this is the natural evolution for the second generation of a piece of hardware but the good news is that it’s still on track for a release early next year.

What I don’t know is if the Q1 date is for general availability or for a developer preview. I could see Microsoft seeding the newer higher-end devices to developers prior to the general release of the hardware but that is only speculation at this time.

Based on the documents I was able to view, Microsoft is approaching the MR/VR market as a must-win market. This is likely because they are on the sidelines of the smartphone segment and missing out on this generation of devices would inflict serious long-term ramifications for the company about being anything more than a cloud company.

It’s great that someone is working on this augmented reality stuff, since Google seems to have abandoned the idea along with their Google Glass fiasco.

It looked pretty stupid.

The main problem, aside from the fact that it was super expensive and looked dumb, was probably that people were uncomfortable being filmed constantly. This could be rectified simply by having a big red LED flashing when filming or taking pictures. Whatever.

They’re still working on augmented reality for phones, but that’s not quite the same thing.

So why am I so stocked on AR?

Basically, because it merges “reality” with the internet. And that’s very good for the Alt-Right. Because the internet is where we rule.

Augmented reality, combined with new advances in artificial intelligence, could be an incredible boon for us. Imagine if there were programs for these AR platforms that could, at a glance, pull up all sorts of “problematic” information on everyone you meet.

This is annuda shoah!

We already have an AI program that can tell if people are faggots just from looking at their faces. Combine that with an instant search and analysis of their social media, and you could easily figure out their race, IQ, political stances, race-mixing relationships, criminal records or tendencies, and so on.

Having this information on people would be a temptation too seductive to pass up, even for the most die-hard normies.

You might think “oh, but then Alt-Right people could easily be found and doxed in the same way!”

Yes. All of them. Millions of them – simultaneously. How do you think shitlibs and Jews would react to suddenly realizing that half the White males they know are actually neon-Nazis?

Our world-view is based on reality. The Jew’s insane mind-control program is, conversely, built on an infinite edifice of lies. It would never withstand a sudden influx of cold, hard reality.

When a holographic star of David overlays most of the people on cable News, provided by people’s trusty AR displays, ZOG won’t be long for this world.

And when these things are miniaturized to the size of a contact lens, everyone will be wearing them.

This is a technology we should be putting our full weight behind.
