Not sure exactly what game Armenia is playing here. I haven’t followed the recent details. I know they attempted to align with the United States, disengaged from Russia, then the United States immediately gave over a bunch of their land to another US ally, Azerbaijan, because they knew Russia was no longer interested in protecting them.

This was a “I left my wife for my secretary and then she looted my back account and fled the country” type situation.

Armenia has officially recognised a Palestinian state, the Armenian foreign ministry said on Friday, the latest country to do so despite opposition from Israel.

Armenia supports a United Nations resolution on an immediate ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza and is in favour of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, a ministry statement said.

Israel’s foreign ministry summoned the Armenian ambassador ‘for a serious reprimand’ following Armenia’s recognition of a Palestinian state, a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

Obvious, Russia is team Palestine, and the Armenian situation is defined by their relationships with Russia and America.

Obviously, America doesn’t want anyone recognizing Palestine. So is a calculated move to move back towards Russia? Again, I would have to look into the way the situation has unfolded since their new friend Uncle Sam gave their land over to their blood enemies. I’m not doing that right now.

So, maybe this is a sign they’re moving back towards Russia, or maybe they’re just trying to be moral. If it’s the latter, then they’re retarded. The decision to hand over the villages in Tavush came after a rapid military campaign in September, during which Azerbaijan’s military pressured ethnic Armenian separatist authorities in the Karabakh region into surrendering.

After Azerbaijan took full control of Karabakh, about 120,000 people fled the region, almost all of its ethnic Armenian population.

Ethnic Armenian fighters backed by Armenian forces had taken control of Karabakh in 1994 at the end of a six-year war. Azerbaijan reclaimed some territory through fighting in 2020 that ended with an armistice, bringing in a Russian peacekeeping force, which began withdrawing this year.

Police in Armenia detained early on Thursday dozens of people in a border village in the northern Tavush province trying to prevent the controversial handover of adjacent border areas to Azerbaijan.

The village of Kirants has been the epicenter of protests against the territorial concessions announced by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s government on April 19. Many of its residents joined by people from other parts of the country have since been camped out in and outside the community, preventing officials from proceeding with preparations for the handover.

Security forces cleared the protest camp early in the morning. They also closed all roads leading to Kirants, allowing only its residents to enter and leave it. The roads remained closed as of late afternoon.

In a statement, the Armenian Interior Ministry said the police are “performing enhanced service” to allow relevant authorities to clear the area of landmines and carry out “geodetic measurements” at the new local section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

According to Garnik Danielian, an opposition lawmaker actively involved in the protests, the police made at least two dozen arrests. He said that many protesters were injured during the arrests. One of them clarified afterwards, though, that the injuries are not serious.

“They got out of buses and attacked us, beating, dragging away and reminding everyone of what happened last time,” said another.

All of the three dozen or so protesters were released from custody later in the morning.

“We call on our compatriots to continue peaceful disobedience actions in all regions and places of the Republic of Armenia in response to these brutal and illegal actions of the police,” read a statement released by the Tavush for the Homeland movement leading the protests.

Artur Sakunts, a human rights activist, criticized the police crackdowns on protesters in Kirants and elsewhere in the country, saying that seems to be becoming a pattern.

“The police continue to violate Armenian citizens’ freedom of assembly,” Sakunts told RFE/RL’s Armenian Service. “Even if some participants of rallies do not act peacefully, only they should be detained.”

Pashinian effectively defended the use of force when he chaired a weekly session of his cabinet in Yerevan on Thursday.

“The police are a security agency, which means that they must have a legitimate right to use force,” said the prime minister, who himself had been jailed for inciting deadly clashes between security forces and antigovernment protesters in Yerevan in 2008.

The latest crackdown came just hours after Armenian state television aired an interview with Pashinian in which he again defended the territorial concessions. He said that he is stripping Azerbaijan of a reason to invade Armenia.

“I’ll let you punch me in the face all you want, as long you promise not to beat me” sounds like a brilliant plan.

Why not just give them the whole country while you’re at it?

If you’re wondering why Azerbaijan can just force another country to give up its land under threat of invasion and then ethnically cleanse it without anyone whining about “muh democracy” and “muh international law” and “muh values,” the answer is actually very simple:

Judges at the top UN court have said that Azerbaijan must allow ethnic Armenians who fled Nagorno-Karabakh during an Azerbaijani military takeover to return to their homes.

In a decision on Friday, the International Court of Justice said that previous ethnic Armenian residents must be allowed back and that those who remained there must be kept safe.

“Azerbaijan must … ensure that persons who have left Nagorno-Karabakh after September 19, 2023, and who wish to return to Nagorno-Karabakh are able to do so in a safe, unimpeded and expeditious manner,” presiding judge Joan Donoghue said.

Azerbaijan captured Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognised as Azeri territory, after defeating separatist ethnic Armenian fighters in a lightning campaign in September. Since the assault, most of the region’s 120,000 ethnic Armenians have fled for neighbouring Armenia.

Almost all the Armenians left in around 2 weeks. The Azeris didn’t even have to do much.

Yerevan has accused Azerbaijan of ethnic cleansing, while Baku has argued that it is seizing control of a breakaway territory whose status has been contested through several wars.

The court also stated that Azerbaijan must guarantee that those Armenians who remain in Nagorno-Karabakh “are free from the use of force or intimidation that may cause them to flee”.

It’s unlikely the Azeris are going to be honoring this ruling.

And of course, the Azeris have a connection to the Israelis, so no one can really stop them from doing whatever they want.

The flights rattled Armenian officials in Yerevan, long wary of the strategic alliance between Israel and Azerbaijan, and shined a light on Israel’s national interests in the restive region south of the Caucasus Mountains.

“For us, it is a major concern that Israeli weapons have been firing at our people,” Arman Akopian, Armenia’s ambassador to Israel, told The Associated Press. In a flurry of diplomatic exchanges, Akopian said he expressed alarm to Israeli politicians and lawmakers in recent weeks over Israeli weapons shipments.

“I don’t see why Israel should not be in the position to express at least some concern about the fate of people being expelled from their homeland,” he told AP.

Azerbaijan’s September blitz involving heavy artillery, rocket launchers and drones — largely supplied by Israel and Turkey, according to experts — forced Armenian separatist authorities to lay down their weapons and sit down for talks on the future of the separatist region.

The Azerbaijani offensive killed over 200 Armenians in the enclave, the vast majority of them fighters, and some 200 Azerbaijani troops, according to officials.

Armenia’s parliament has approved a key step towards joining the International Criminal Court (ICC), a move that is set to escalate tensions with the ex-Soviet country’s traditional ally, Russia.

Lawmakers ratified the ICC’s founding Rome Statute on Tuesday, subjecting itself to the jurisdiction of the court in The Hague and vexing Russia, whose president the world court wants to arrest.

A spokeswoman for the Yerevan parliament said 60 deputies voted to ratify the Rome Statute of the ICC and 22 voted against.

In March, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin over war crimes in Ukraine, and the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.

The ICC members are expected to make the arrest if the Russian leader sets foot on their territory.

The vote illustrated the chasm between Moscow and Yerevan, which has been growing due to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russia’s inaction as Azerbaijan recaptured Nagorno-Karabakh, a region controlled for three decades by ethnic Armenians, most of whom have now fled.

The authorities of Azerbaijan’s breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh have announced the dissolution of the self-proclaimed republic after a Russian-mediated truce ended a flare-up of hostilities between Stepanakert and Baku.

Samvel Shahramanyan, the president of the unrecognized republic, issued a decree on Thursday ordering the “dissolution of all state institutions and their branches by January 1, 2024.”

“The Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) ceases to exist,” the announcement declared, as quoted by the NKR InfoCenter.

The document also says that the region’s inhabitants, including those who have fled, should “familiarize themselves with the conditions of reintegration offered by the Republic of Azerbaijan,” and make an independent decision about whether to return to Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the decree, the dissolution is “in connection with the current difficult military-political situation” and is aimed at ensuring the safety of Nagorno-Karabakh residents, while taking into account the Russian-brokered agreement with Baku. The latter allows residents of the breakaway region, including military personnel who lay down their arms, to travel freely, the statement said.

Some of these assholes were actually protesting the Russian embassy for not helping them.

Of course, we don’t know how many of the people supported the 2018 revolution. You have a situation where women have all this power, and the youth are stirred up with all of this sexualized imagery from the media. You obviously can’t blame every Armenian.

But it’s a fact that Russia was standing by to assist, then they did this anti-Russian revolution. Whining that Russia isn’t assisting after that is dumb.

They actually were assisting, in fact. There were Russian peacekeepers there. They just weren’t going to do a huge war, while the entire government of Armenia is against them. Unfortunately, if Armenians were to try to reverse this revolution, it would be too late for Nagorno-Karabakh. This is now a done deal, and the population is evacuating.

I haven’t written much about the Nagorno-Karabakh situation, because I assume people don’t really care very much, and also because I find the whole situation personally frustrating.

For those who don’t know: this is a disputed territory in the former USSR (exactly like Eastern Ukraine), where a territory that is majority Armenian (Christian) ended up on the Azerbaijani (Moslem) side of the border. They declared themselves semi-autonomous in the 1990s after a war, and for more than a decade, both Armenia and Azerbaijan accepted the status quo.

The status quo was rattled in 2016 and then more seriously in 2020 when a real war broke out. This was part and parcel of the US attempt to cause trouble on Russia’s doorstep. It was confirmed that Turkey sent in a bunch of terrorists from Syria (who were out of a job after Russia cleaned up that mess) to fight for the Azeris.

There’s been an ongoing conflict – really a low-intensity warfare situation – since 2020, when Russia brokered a ceasefire. The Azeris on Tuesday made a move to inflict brutal dominance over the territory, labeled an “anti-terrorism operation” – exactly what Zelensky started doing in 2021 in Eastern Ukraine.

Unfortunately, the Armenians elected a traitor government that is anti-Russia and was not doing anything about this situation. Briefly: the country’s prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, was the leader of the 2018 anti-Russian, Western-backed color revolution. His policy is that the country should be integrated into Europe (even though he’s at various points lied about that). The president, elected in 2020, is also a part of this anti-Russian, pro-EU trend.

A majority of Armenians apparently supported all of this anti-Russian stuff, and apparently didn’t realize that their arch-nemesis the Azeris were totally backed by the US/EU and that the West likes Azeris better because the West is Jewish and Azeris are not Christian.

Now, today, the realization has come, as the leadership sits and does nothing while the Azeris assert total control over Nagorono-Karabakh.

Mass protests continued in the Armenian capital for the second straight day on Wednesday, prompted by a new escalation in Azerbaijan’s breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Protesters gathered in Yerevan’s government quarter, denouncing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as a “traitor” to the Armenian people and demanding that he step down over what they view as his failure to help the predominantly ethnically Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The rally was marred by violence, as protesters trying to breach government buildings faced off against a large police force guarding them.

Footage from the scene shows police officers clad in riot gear scuffling with the crowd. Several people were reportedly injured during the skirmishes.

By late Wednesday, however, the unrest had seemingly waned, as most protesters had left the government quarter.

A separate rally was held outside Russia’s embassy in Yerevan by protesters blaming the Nagorno-Karabakh situation on Moscow. Many demonstrators were seen waving US, EU, and even Ukrainian flags, as well as ripping up and burning Russian passports.

The new flare-up in Nagorno-Karabakh started on Tuesday when Baku launched what it called an “anti-terrorist” operation in the breakaway region. The Azerbaijani military made rapid gains against local forces until a ceasefire on Wednesday brokered by Russian peacekeepers deployed to the region seemingly put a halt to the hostilities. 

This could turn into a pro-Russian revolution. Hopefully it does.

Russia is on standby to come in and clean out the Azeri filth, but right now, the government of Armenia is standing in their way. If the Armenians were to rise up and install a new nationalistic, pro-Russian government, Russia could vastly increase the size of their peacekeeping force in Nagorno-Karabakh, and protect the people from the terroristic Islamic aggression.

Of course, the US has been looking for places to transfer their anti-Russian war out of the Ukraine, due to massive losses, so it’s probably all part of the plan that Russia get further involved in this. The difference is, Russia could probably win quickly. It’s not exactly the same as the Donbass situation, given that Nagorno-Karabakh was independent from 1994, and there might not be a lot of popular support among the Azeris for a protracted war.

That said, with terrorist veterans of the Syrian war being airdropped in, it might not matter how much the Azeri population cares about the war.

Russian Peacekeepers Killed

Azeris killed Russian peacekeepers in their attack today.

A group of Russian peacekeepers was killed in Nagorno-Karabakh on Wednesday, when their vehicle came under small-arms fire, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.  

The peacekeepers were returning to an observation post when their car was attacked by unknown assailants. All the servicemen inside the car were killed on the spot, the military said, without revealing the exact number of casualties.

Russian and Azerbaijani investigators are examining the scene of the incident, the military added.

Whenever people die, you hate to say “this is good,” but it is certainly going to drum-up support in Russia for more action in the region.

It’s definitely something the Azeris should have tried to avoid, one would think.

Somehow, the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is not the most important thing in the world, and in fact, has been of relatively little importance, despite the fact that it is literally the exact same situation: an ethnic group caught on the wrong side of a border after the fall of the USSR.

Whatever else you can say about this Armenia-Azerbaijan situation, it demonstrates, as an absolute matter, that a random border skirmish in the former USSR is not the most important thing in the world. There have been dozens of these events, and all of the sudden, for no reason, the 2022 Russian SMO in the Ukraine became the most important thing ever.

The Nagorno-Karabakh situation is less important for a lot of reasons, firstly that neither party is really anti-Europe or pro-Russia (for now) and also neither party is hardcore pro-anal. There is less “grip,” as it were, for a US military operation to attach itself to.

That said, if the Armenian government changes, and becomes more pro-Russian as a result of this, then the US will definitely start sending resources to Azerbaijan. It’s definitely going to be a lot harder to do, however.

Despite the fact that Azeris have a shared history and culture with Iran, Iran is dependent on Russia, and definitely, certainly, not going to let America run supplies over their border. Turkey will clandestinely run terrorists, but they can’t really let the US set up shop and move heavy weaponry.

It’s not really a situation the US could hope to win, though they can create a problem.

The Kremlin has expressed skepticism over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Armenia and her condemnation of Azerbaijan over the latest border clashes.

Pelosi visited the Armenian capital Yerevan on Sunday and accused Azerbaijan of launching an “illegal and deadly” cross-border attack against Armenia earlier in the week. Baku claimed it retaliated after provocations from Yerevan.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that while Russia welcomed any genuine effort to defuse tensions between the two sides, the US official’s comments were not very diplomatic.

“Can actions and statements as brazen as hers actually help with normalization? We’ll see, time will tell,” Peskov told journalists, adding that Moscow’s preference is for “quiet” diplomacy in such scenarios.

Pelosi also used the visit to criticize Russia’s military cooperation with Armenia, saying Armenians “were disappointed they got fact-finders and not protection,” from the relationship, suggesting Washington may be a better guarantor of security.

Yeah, well – of course. As soon as you see “America embraces Russian ally,” you know they’re trying to peel them off.

It was interesting that they didn’t just embrace the Islamic terrorists in Azerbaijan and start sending them weapons. But they can still just do that. The fact that they didn’t do that first though shows that the entire State Department is not just totally braindead. They can at least think of some other idea than “just send the Moslems weapons! Kill the Christians!”

Even if they don’t manage to peel off Armenia (and that seems unlikely), by flying into a Russian ally country, Pelosi still sort of punks Russia. America doesn’t really care about the Armenian-Azeri conflict anyway.
