The new character named Luce (which means “Light” in Italian) helps to “guide young pilgrims towards hope and faith” according to the Catholic News Agency.

Luce and her friends were designed by tokidoki co-founder Simone Legno. Luce is joined by her dog Santino, alongside her friends Fe, Xin, and Sky. With a design reminiscent of Sanrio characters, Luce and friends wear colorful raincoats and boots to travel on their holy pilgrimage. Luce and her friends have unique markings in their eyes which Jubilee chief organizer Archbishop Rino Fisichella describes as “a symbol of the hope of the heart”.

You couldn’t even hire an actual Jap to make it?

The Biden administration is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds to study why minority children read Japanese comic books, part of an initiative to implement “diversity, equity, and inclusion” in the nation’s libraries.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency under the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities, this month awarded New York’s Queens College $313,318 to conduct a three-year study of manga and to “understand why [black, indigenous, and people of color] kids read manga,” a style of comic book that originated in Japan. The grant is aimed at closing the “knowledge gap” for librarians who are “unfamiliar” with manga and to identify manga titles popular with teenagers. The grant is provided under the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, which aims to “develop a diverse library and archival workforce” and “reduce equity gaps and address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion” in libraries.

It is the latest example of the Biden administration using taxpayer dollars to fund diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The State Department sent $100,000 to Palestinian groups to promote DEI principles and is spending $12 million to implement DEI in Iraq. The administration recently spent $90,000 to study diversity, equity, and inclusion in the construction industry. The Washington Free Beacon reported that the Biden State Department has spent nearly $5 million to help foreign activist groups stage pride parades and drag shows.

Queens College will partner with an organization called Manga in Libraries, which formed in 2021 to promote manga in school and public libraries. The group recommends manga titles that focus on racial, LGBTQ, and disability issues, such as The Bride Was a Boy, described as a “charming tale” about “a woman assigned male at birth” who explores “her sexuality, gender, and transition.”

To promote the inclusion of girls in manga, Manga in Libraries recommends The Ancient Magus’ Bride, which tells the story of Ainsworth, “a seven-foot-tall humanoid with an animal skull for a head,” who marries a 15-year-old orphan girl he purchased at a slave auction.

A student at a leading British university has published a research paper, in which he detailed his experience of masturbating to a type of Japanese erotic manga that sexualizes underage boys. The university and the peer-reviewed journal that published the study are investigating the matter following online backlash.

The University of Manchester and Qualitative Research journal are probing the publication of work by PhD student Karl Andersson, which was titled “I am not alone – we are all alone: Using masturbation as an ethnographic method in research on shota subculture in Japan.”

A full-page ad for the Tawawa on Monday (Getsuyōbi no Tawawa) fanservice manga series was published in The Nikkei newspaper on April 4 and has since drawn criticism from the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). The global gender equality organization issued a letter to the newspaper on April 11 stating that the advertisement is “unacceptable” and asked for further clarification about the choice to print it.

The ad shows main character Ai standing in profile in her school uniform. The text reads, “I hope this will be a wonderful week.” Kodansha placed the ad to promote the release of the manga’s fourth volume.

“April 4th is the first Monday of the year for new employees,” a representative from Young Magazine told Comic Natalie. “We put up a full-page ad to blow away their anxiety and cheer them up”.”

The manga series began in 2015 as weekly pin-ups posted on artist Kiseki Himura’s Twitter account. The main character, Ai, is a high school girl with large breasts who encounters a businessman on the train ride to school. The girl’s regular appearance on the train brightens up the man’s gloomy Monday commute.

The Nikkei paper is part of UN Women’s Unstereotype Alliance effort, a global campaign to promote “gender equality through media and advertising and eliminate harmful stereotypes.” The Nikkei paper has taken an active role in promoting the initiative’s ideas in the past, including the “Nikkei Woman Empowerment Advertising Award,” which recognizes advertisements that contribute to gender equality. The award has a three-step process for screening ads known as “The 3 Ps” – Presence (does the ad include diverse people?), Perspective (does it take the perspectives of both men and women into account?), and Personality (does the subject show personality and independence?).

Kae Ishikawa, the director of UN Women’s Japan-based office, was interviewed by The Huffington Post about the advertisement, which sparked additional controversy online. According to Ishikawa, the manga ad fails to meet the requirements outlined in The 3 Ps. She told The Huffington Post that the ad reflects a male-centric view of high school girls and that their personality is limited to being sexually enticing to men.

“Obviously, advertising a manga about a underage girl as a male sexual target risks promoting stereotypes that impose these roles on women,” Ishikawa said.

Part of the issue is the newspaper’s target audience, according to Tokyo Institute of Technology professor Renge Jibu. The Nikkei is the largest business newspaper in Japan, akin to the U.S.’s The Wall Street Journal or the U.K.’s Financial Times. The choice to run the ad there was more likely to draw attention from people who didn’t want to see it.

“It’s not a problem for people who want to read Young Magazine to pick it up and read it there,” Professor Jibu said. “Rather, the problem is that the media failed to protect the ‘right of women and men who do not like sexually explicit manga not to be exposed to expressions they do not want to see.'”

The Nikkei’s PR office told The Huffington Post that the company is aware of the current controversy revolving around the ad but do not comment on individual ad placement decisions.

Kodansha issued a statement to The Huffington Post in light of the online controversy. The company said, “The advertisement was placed in conjunction with the release of the new book in order to attract new readers. We take your comments seriously and will give full consideration to the future development of our advertising.”

Ishikawa told The Huffington Post that she was told by a representative in a meeting with the newspaper that the advertisement was evaluated by various people in the company, but they did not recognize the ad as a problem. She also stated the organization is not questioning the publishers and creators of works like Tawawa on Monday, only the role The Nikkei played in placing the ad due to the publication’s status as part of the Unstereotype Alliance effort.

“Without an explanation from the company, I am not convinced that we will continue to work with them to promote gender equality through the power of advertising,” Ishikawa said.

Publishing organizations in other countries have stricter guidelines relating to gender equality in advertisements. For example, the U.K.-based Advertising Standards Association has banned advertising using “harmful stereotypes based on gender” since 2019.

“This full-page advertisement has made it clear that Japanese companies and the media are left behind in these international trends,” said Professor Jibu.

UN Women have asked for a timely response from The Nikkei but have not received a response.

Even the series’ anime adaptation has faced some controversy in the past. The first 12-episode season of anime shorts debuted on YouTube in October 2016, but YouTube removed the first episode before restoring it within the same week. NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan relaunched the series on Nico Nico Video beginning with the second episode.

You can say these cartoons are perverted and so on, and you’d largely be right.

On Friday, Daily Stormer published a heartfelt obituary for Kentaro Miura, creator and artist of the manga BERSERK, whose untimely death at the age of 54 was announced this week.

While the obituary was intended to celebrate the life of Miura-san, we also made the decision to include speculation about his death possibly being related to the vaccine in the obituary. Some readers felt that this was inappropriate, and that an obituary should be about the positive aspects of a person’s life.

However, obituaries have traditionally included the cause of death, and some bit of information about how and why the person died. We do not know why Kentaro Miura died. We know that he died of heart failure, but we do not know what caused that. Given that he died on May 5, during the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine, and given that the vaccine has been repeatedly found to cause blood clots that lead to heart failure, we felt obligated to include questions about the vaccine in the obituary.

Obituaries are not simply to honor someone’s life, but to provide a record of their death, and the context of mass vaccination in Japan is relevant to the record of Miura’s death.

It is a dark shame on the whole world that this ridiculous virus hoax and this deadly vaccine have invaded all of our lives, and invaded every aspect of our lives, including our ability to honor our dead. We shouldn’t forget that at the height of this hoax, many funerals were canceled or banned across the world due to the government’s dictate that people were not allowed to gather in crowds.

It was not our decision to let this virus hoax take over the world. Daily Stormer has been opposed to the use of the virus hoax to take away people’s freedom and harm the wellbeing of the population since the original “flatten the curve” lockdown. However, it is our duty to record history. In the future, people will look back on this time period, and wonder about the deaths of everyone who died of heart failure amidst this mass vaccination campaign. Every person lives their lives as a part of history, and every person dies as a part of history. Kentaro Miura’s life influenced history, and his death, coming before he could finish his great work, affect history. When we remember him, we need to remember the total context.

Generations in the future will read BERSERK, and they will all wonder why it was never finished. Those future generations have a right to know that the reason may well be that he was murdered by a pharmaceutical company.

Kentaro Miura will be greatly missed, and also, he probably died from a vaccine.

Miura-san was 54, and it has been stated that he died from aortic dissection. Publisher Hakusensha confirmed his death in a statement.

“All us editors sincerely pray for his repose, expressing our deepest respect and appreciation for his work,” the  company said. They added that his family has already held a private funeral.

This is truly a sad event.

I user on r/Berserk posted this lovely tribute painting.

Another r/Berserker posted a photo of an arrangement he’d put up at his Barnes & Noble store (which does still exist and which you should go to instead of Amazon, even if you pay triple).

“He probably died from the vaxx” is a meme at this point. But they are saying he died of aortic dissection, which is yet another weird heart problem.

Miura-san was 54, which is older than a lot of these people who are dying, and not necessarily too young to have a fatal heart problem, especially if he had a genetic history.

At the same time, Japan has rolled out the deadly Pfizer vaxx and has been ramping up vaxxing. They just recently approved the deadly AstraZeneca and Moderna vaxxes.

So, once again: because you can’t get any actual information about the vaxx, whenever anyone dies or gets some strange disease, you have to ask if it’s a result of the vaxx. It’s just a basic, obvious question.

This fact just has to be mentioned in any obituary now, as a matter of course, because if someone did die of the vaxx, the record needs to show that this is a possibility. I do not want to violate his obituary with this material, but I do not have any choice.

We can now put that aside.

He may also have died from normal heart problems caused by stress. Lots of mangaka have health problems and die young due to the stress of making manga, which typically involves nonstop work.

We can put that aside now, and simply honor Miura-san’s life and work. 

Miura-san was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He made his first manga at the age of 10, and his school published it for his classmates. That series, entitled Miuranger, ended up spanning 40 volumes. By the time he was in middle school, he began using India ink and professional techniques.

Miura-san continued to publish throughout his schooling, and at the age of 18, he began working as an assistant to George Morikawa, creator of boxing manga Hajime no Ippo.

However, Morikawa quickly decided that there was nothing more he could teach Miura, and told him to go make his own books.

Miura-san briefly attended art school, where he was a big success. He then started working professionally as a manga creator, and for a couple years struggled to get a hit. The first story of Berserk was published in Monthly Animal House (now called Young Animal) in 1989.

Berserk was published in Young Animal until Miura-san’s death (although it had been a while since publishing last).

Several times, he made the cover of the magazine. It is a rare event for this kind of magazine to publish manga on the cover, given that the cover is usually reserved for half-naked women.

The books are published in English by Dark Horse comics. (While I do recommend the comics, it should be stated that they are filled with bloody violence and rape.)

Miura-san was often criticized for his long hiatuses and the generally slow pace of Berserk’s release. However, it must be noted that Miura-san was doing extra work, because his art style was so detailed. It is in fact much more akin to Western comic art than any other manga that I’m aware of. At least the early material was.

It got more cutesy nippy as the years went on, but it was still much more detailed and higher quality that most any other manga. The average manga is very rushed, with repetitive and low quality art, but Berserk was always very heavy on quality, with each frame being filled with love.

Often, the cutesy stuff was mixed in alongside his more traditional dark and detailed aesthetic.

In 2019, he took a break from Berserk to publish Giganto Maxia. It had a cutesy female protagonist fighting against the fantastically creative monsters that were a fixtures of his work.

That story took place 100 million years in the future, and featured a tardigrade.

This more cutesy influence was possibly due to Miura-san’s well known addiction to the video game Idolm@ster. It is a game where you make your own Japanese pop idol, with core gameplay that resembles Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution.

Here is a video analyzing the affect his addiction to this game may have had on his work.

That video comes to the conclusion that there is no solid proof he was actually addicted to Idolm@ster. It may simply have been his obsessive perfectionism that caused his work to take so long to be released.

Once digital editing software became a thing, Mirua-san became even more obsessed with detail, and was said to have actually gone through pixel by pixel to fix up his art.

The influences of Kentaro Miura on Japanese and American culture cannot be quantified. In the case of the latter, much of it is unknown to the end user. But virtually all great modern artists were fans of Berserk, and Mirua-san’s influence resonates throughout Western culture.

Berserk directly inspired many Japanese works, including untold other manga and anime series. That includes Attack on Titan, which is probably the most famous anime ever (especially among right-wingers, since it is about mass immigration into Europe).

Several Final Fantasy characters (including Cloud from FFVII) and Dante from Devil May Cry were influenced by Berserk. The comic’s general aesthetic was one of the bases for the Dark Souls series.

Throughout the Dark Souls games, there are many scenes pulled directly from the Berserk manga.

Dark Souls is in fact the best Berserk video game, as the direct video game adaptations of Berserk were less than stellar.

Just so, many cite Warren Ellis’ Castlevania anime (Netflix) as the best anime adaptation of the manga, as there were many criticisms of the various Japanese versions. (Warren Ellis has recently been metoo’d and removed from the series, and it was going down before that, but the first season remains solid.)

I still love the original 1997 anime, as that was my first introduction to the wonderful world of Berserk.

As of this month, there are over 50 million copies of the Berserk manga in circulation, and that number is bound to double quickly as more find out about his work as a result of his untimely death.

Kentaro Miura was a special person, and an inspiration to me and so many others.
